FIFA President Gianni Infantino has vehemently denied allegations published by a British newspaper claiming he engaged in an affair and used his influence to benefit an employee while serving at UEFA. The claims, which FIFA has labeled “categorically untrue” and “defamatory,” emerged following a tumultuous period for the football governing body’s leader, who is currently seeking re-election.
Allegations of Affair and Improper Payments
The allegations, reported by The Daily Telegraph, suggest that Infantino, who was UEFA’s secretary general from 2009 to 2016, was involved in an intimate relationship with a UEFA employee. According to the newspaper’s report, this individual allegedly received a substantial payment upon her departure from UEFA, described as a “six-figure sum.” Furthermore, the report indicates that Infantino allegedly used his position to secure a promotion for this employee and that tuition fees for a business school, amounting to approximately 45,000 British pounds ($85,900), were also covered.
UEFA acknowledged that a departure payment was made to the individual in question, along with the payment of fees for an MBA course. However, the European football body stated that the payment was consistent with regulations for departing staff at the time, noting that these regulations have since been strengthened in 2016. UEFA did not confirm or deny the existence of an affair.
Infantino and FIFA’s Strong Rebuttal
In response to the newspaper’s report, a spokesperson for FIFA stated that Infantino, who has been married since 2001, “strongly denies these allegations.” The statement emphasized that the claims are “categorically untrue” and that “any insinuation of inappropriate conduct or violation of statutes or regulations is defamatory.” FIFA further asserted that no employee at UEFA or FIFA has ever lodged a complaint regarding Infantino’s behavior, as no such incident occurred.
The allegations surfaced just days after Infantino faced significant criticism over a now-shelved plan to introduce private investment into the World Cup. This plan had drawn strong opposition, particularly from UEFA, which had threatened to boycott World Cups if the proposal was not fully withdrawn.
