Actress Isla Fisher, known for her extensive Hollywood career spanning over two decades, recently experienced a unique sense of stardom not in Los Angeles, but upon returning to her native Australia to film the new comedy Spa Weekend. The Perth-raised star, aged 50, shared that the reception she received while shooting in Queensland was unexpectedly warm, making her feel like a “bona fide star” in a way she hadn’t anticipated.

A Star’s Welcome on Home Soil

Fisher described the experience of being recognized and warmly greeted by locals as “amazing.” She told The Daily Telegraph, “Everyone was like, ‘Oh hello, Isla.’ I got treated how American actors get treated in America. It felt so good!” This sentiment came nearly 25 years after her international breakthrough role in Scooby-Doo, which was also filmed in Australia. However, this latest project offered a different kind of homecoming.

Instead of simply returning to familiar surroundings, Fisher was actively engaged in making an American film on Australian soil, portraying a distinctly Australian character. This dual experience of working on an international production while embodying her roots provided a novel and deeply satisfying professional moment.

Embracing the ‘Aussie Woman’ Persona

In Spa Weekend, Fisher plays Mel, a character described as chaotic, unfiltered, and prone to disrupting a luxury getaway planned by three old friends. These friends are portrayed by American actresses Leslie Mann, Anna Faris, and Michelle Buteau. Rather than downplaying her Australian heritage for the role, Fisher was encouraged by the film’s directors, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (known for The Hangover and Bad Moms), to fully embrace it.

“I definitely was channelling a lot of people from my childhood,” Fisher explained. “There’s something about Aussie women. We’re just tough. We play dirty – and so there’s been something fun about playing Mel with that backdrop of how I was raised and bringing that kind of bogan, Perth Aussie thing into this quite uptight American puritanical group.”

Initially, Fisher harbored reservations about making Mel overtly Australian, fearing it might reinforce outdated stereotypes. However, the directors’ encouragement allowed her to tap into an aspect of herself that Hollywood roles had rarely allowed her to express fully: authenticity.

Finding Herself in the Character

The opportunity to play Mel allowed Fisher to infuse the character with elements of her own personality, particularly her impulsive nature. “I definitely feel like that’s a part of the character that I leaned into,” she said. “I feel like she’s always looking for a dopamine hit – however she’s going to get it.” This connection to the character’s spontaneity and drive resonated deeply with the actress.

The production of Spa Weekend took place on the Gold Coast, with the scenery doubling for Los Angeles. This setting provided Fisher with the unusual experience of playing an Australian character in an American movie while physically being in Australia. The film itself centers on four women navigating the pressures of modern life, including the challenges of the “sandwich generation” – balancing careers, children, and aging parents.

A Full Circle Moment

For Isla Fisher, returning to Australia for this project represented a significant full-circle moment. After years of establishing herself as an Australian actress making her mark in the competitive landscape of Hollywood, she found herself back on home turf, experiencing the kind of enthusiastic recognition she observed American actors receiving in their own country. This homecoming wasn’t just a return to a place, but a moment of professional affirmation and personal connection, highlighting the unique satisfaction of being celebrated on the soil where her journey began.
