Celebrity chef James Martin, 53, has quietly reconciled with his father, Ian Martin, ending years of estrangement. The reconciliation coincides with Martin’s preparations to marry his girlfriend, Kim Johnson, 39, following a reported Christmas proposal.
Path to Reconciliation
Ian Martin describes the father-son bond as “as good as ever,” adding, “There’s no estrangement.” A family friend notes that Martin’s stance has softened over time, stating, “It’s been a long road, but… the pair of them have slowly rebuilt bridges over the past couple of years. Now they’re able to look forward rather than dwell on the past. Both have realised life’s too short to carry on not speaking.”
Last year, Martin shared details of an emotional reunion. His father attended one of his live shows, leading to heartfelt moments. Martin recounted treating Ian to a stay at the Ritz and a backstage visit at the Palladium. “When I stepped on stage… I looked into the audience and the first face I saw was my dad’s. I held it all together throughout the show but I welled up at the end,” Martin said.
Roots of the Family Rift
The estrangement began around 2006 and intensified in 2008 after Martin’s autobiography Driven included harsh descriptions of his then-stepmother, Sarah Briggs. Martin called her “the ugliest woman I have ever met” and a “wicked stepmother,” alleging she burned his childhood toys, photos, and clothes.
Briggs, a concert pianist, won a libel case, resulting in the book being pulped and re-edited. She denied the claims: “My jaw dropped as I read the extraordinary allegations… It was graphically depicted, but wholly untrue. I had never destroyed anything belonging to James.”
Martin later stated in 2010 that he had not spoken to his father for four years and accepted he “will never be a part of my life.” He cited his father’s turbulent life, including multiple divorces and remarriages, as contributing factors.
Ian, a former catering manager and event promoter, once worked with stars like Spandau Ballet, José Carreras, and Shirley Bassey. His business collapsed in 2002, leaving debts of £159,000.
Strong Bond with Mother
In contrast, Martin maintains a close relationship with his mother, Sue. He calls her his biggest fan and the first person he contacts for advice. “We talk on the phone two or three times every day,” Martin has said, emphasizing family values from his farming upbringing.
Major Life Milestone
The chef’s engagement to personal trainer Kim Johnson marks a significant change. The couple, together for two years, reportedly got engaged over Christmas, with Martin gifting her a £150,000 Land Rover. Johnson appeared to confirm it on Instagram, posting a photo of one of Martin’s dishes captioned, “So proud of my fiancé.”
This follows Martin’s 2022 split from Louise Davies. Johnson was previously married to businessman Arun Nayar. Their romance surfaced last April when spotted at Tiffany’s in Mayfair; she moved into his Hampshire home in October.
Martin once dismissed marriage, telling the Sunday People in 2019: “Marriage doesn’t interest me in the slightest… I don’t need to spend 60 grand on a day.”
