Jamie Dornan takes on the role of Aragorn in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The announcement came during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation on April 15.

New and Returning Cast Members

This follows reports that Viggo Mortensen will not reprise his role as the iconic ranger. New additions feature Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard.

Expected returning actors include Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, director Andy Serkis as Gollum, and Lee Pace as Thranduil from The Hobbit trilogy.

The Irish actor recently hosted a live comedy show in the UK.

Plot and Production Details

The story unfolds between the events of The Hobbit trilogy and The Lord of the Rings, centering on Aragorn and Gandalf’s quest to track Gollum and uncover secrets about Bilbo Baggins’ ring.

Scheduled for release on December 17, 2027, the film reunites producer Peter Jackson with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

Jackson shared an update around Tolkien Reading Day: “Andy is doing a terrific job. It’s looking amazing. The script is coming together really well and I think it’s going to be a really good film.”

Franchise Background

The original Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003) earned 17 Oscars and grossed over $2.9 billion worldwide. The Hobbit trilogy (2012-2014), also directed by Jackson, matched that box office success.

A separate TV series, The Rings of Power, launched on Prime Video in 2022.

Another Film in Development

The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past is also underway, set 14 years after Frodo’s departure. It follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin retracing their adventure’s early steps. Stephen Colbert, a devoted Tolkien enthusiast, co-writes it with his son.
