During a recent World Cup match where England secured a 3-2 victory against Mexico, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was subjected to homophobic abuse from sections of the crowd. Throughout the game, particularly during his goal kicks, a significant portion of the Estadio Azteca crowd repeatedly chanted the word “puto” at the Everton player. This chant has become a persistent issue for Mexican football, with FIFA imposing substantial fines, exceeding £1 million, on the Mexican Football Federation due to its repeated use in stadiums.

The term “puto” is understood to mean male prostitute. While some, including former Mexican international Marco Fabián, have argued it is part of traditional terrace culture and folklore, the Mexican government’s anti-discrimination commission, CONAPRED, officially classifies the term as homophobic. Pickford, who heard the taunt directed at him with nearly every goal kick he took during the intense match, now faces this recurring challenge.

England Supporters’ Group Condemns Chants

An official statement was released by the England fan group, Three Lions Pride & Pride In Football, expressing their disappointment. The group unequivocally stated that the “puto” chant is not mere banter, tradition, or football culture, but rather an act of homophobia. They emphasized that it is impossible to separate the word from its history as a homophobic slur.

The statement highlighted that this was the third instance of such chanting from Mexican fans during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following similar occurrences in matches against Czechia and Ecuador. The group asserted that this situation is unacceptable and suggested that FIFA’s perceived weakening of anti-discrimination messaging leading up to and during the tournament may have contributed to the issue. They called upon the Mexican Football Federation and FIFA to implement more effective anti-discrimination education programs and messaging. Furthermore, they urged for stronger penalties if the chanting persists, emphasizing FIFA’s responsibility to protect the integrity of the sport and ensure it remains inclusive for everyone.

Jordan Pickford’s Penalty-Saving Prowess

Beyond the controversy, Jordan Pickford is recognized for his exceptional skills as a goalkeeper, particularly his prowess in penalty shootouts. At 30 years old, the England and Everton shot-stopper has a history of crucial saves in high-pressure situations. Notably, he saved a penalty from Manuel Akanji during England’s Euro 2024 quarter-final shootout victory against Switzerland, significantly contributing to their advancement.

Techniques and Strategies

Information gathered from Goalkeeper.com sheds light on Pickford’s methodical approach to facing penalty kicks. He is known for his preparation, famously using a water bottle adorned with lists of penalty takers and their preferred shot directions. However, the analysis stresses that relying solely on historical data is insufficient; a goalkeeper’s intuition also plays a vital role.

Pickford employs a mixed strategy when facing penalties, avoiding predictability. Unlike some goalkeepers who consistently favor one side, Pickford adapts his approach. He might dive towards the power side, as seen in his save from Jorginho in the Euro 2020 final, or towards the placement side, as demonstrated in his save against Akanji. This adaptability makes him a formidable opponent from the penalty spot.

Technical Execution and Performance Metrics

The physical execution of a dive is critical, especially given FIFA’s rule requiring goalkeepers to remain on the line until the shot is taken. Pickford’s technique involves launching himself from his back foot, transferring body weight forward efficiently, minimizing any negative steps, and keeping both hands active to maximize the chance of making a save. This technique has been evident in his saves against Italy’s Andrea Belotti in 2020 and Colombia’s Carlos Bacca in the 2018 World Cup.

Interestingly, statistics suggest Pickford performs better in penalty shootouts for the England national team than his overall career average, and also performs better in shootouts compared to saves made during regular play. This indicates that under the heightened pressure of representing his country in crucial moments, Pickford often elevates his game.

Context of the World Cup Tournament

The 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament is progressing through its knockout stages, with anticipation building towards the semi-finals. England, aiming to win the tournament for the first time in 60 years, has shown strong performances from key players like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. However, they face stiff competition from other major footballing nations such as France, Spain, and Argentina, while traditional powerhouses like Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil, and Portugal have already been eliminated.

The article also briefly touches upon other news related to the England team, including a sickness bug affecting Declan Rice, potential delays due to heat illness warnings and Saharan dust, injury concerns for Kylian Mbappé, and a hamstring issue for Marc Guéhi. Information regarding the full match schedule, squads, rule changes, and prize money for the 2026 World Cup is also available.
