Former NRL star Josh Dugan has made a surprising return to the rugby league field, playing in a Queensland Cup match for the Northern Pride against the Ipswich Jets. This marks his first appearance in a significant game in over five years, a period during which he has established a new career as a fishing guide in Far North Queensland.

A New Chapter as a Fishing Guide

Dugan, aged 36, featured in the centres for the Northern Pride’s victory, contributing 59 metres from six carries and making 11 tackles in their 34-12 win. His comeback follows a period of over two years dedicated to his role with Tropic Barra Adventures, a charter business where he guides anglers to prime fishing locations. This new lifestyle has been a prominent feature on his social media, showcasing not only his passion for fishing but also for hunting game such as deer and feral pigs using rifles and bow and arrow.

During his time away from professional football, Dugan has frequently shared images of his fishing successes, catching a variety of species including trevally, coral trout, and barramundi. He also shares posts from satisfied clients of the charter business, highlighting his engagement with his new profession.

Dugan’s Notorious NRL Career

Throughout his NRL career, Josh Dugan was recognized as an electrifying player capable of single-handedly changing the course of a game. He began his first-grade journey with the Canberra Raiders, playing 70 matches and scoring 27 tries. However, his promising football career was frequently overshadowed by off-field incidents.

Controversies and Contract Terminations

One of the earliest significant controversies occurred in 2013 when the Canberra Raiders terminated his contract. This decision followed his posting of controversial social media images depicting him giving the middle finger during a drinking session on a rooftop with teammate Blake Ferguson. Shortly after, he lost a lucrative contract with the Brisbane Broncos after telling a Raiders fan to ‘end yourself’ via social media.

Further incidents marked his career. In 2017, just days before a crucial State of Origin decider, Dugan and Ferguson were reportedly involved in a lengthy pub session on the NSW north coast, leading to them being too hungover to attend a scheduled media appearance. In 2019, he was allegedly involved in a physical altercation at a nightclub in Airlie Beach, Queensland. Crucially, he failed to report this incident to his club or the NRL’s integrity unit, further complicating his professional standing.

Representing NSW and Final NRL Stint

Despite the off-field challenges, Dugan also represented New South Wales 12 times in State of Origin, often serving as the team’s primary fullback. His NRL career concluded with the Cronulla Sharks. Even during his time with the Sharks, he faced further disciplinary action. He was sacked by the club and fined $50,000 by the NRL for breaching biosecurity and government lockdown rules during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In total, Josh Dugan played 215 NRL matches, scoring 79 tries at club level. He also represented Australia in 12 international matches over a three-year period, showcasing his talent on the international stage before his career was ultimately defined by a series of off-field issues.

A Surprising Comeback

Dugan’s recent participation in the Queensland Cup signifies a remarkable turn of events. After a significant hiatus from the sport and a successful transition into a new career, his presence back on the field has undoubtedly captured the attention of rugby league fans. His journey from a high-profile, often controversial NRL player to a fishing guide and now a part-time competitor highlights a unique path post-football.

The Queensland Cup serves as a vital development league for the NRL, and Dugan’s involvement, even in a single match, suggests a continued connection to the sport. His performance indicates he still possesses some of the physical capabilities required for the game, despite his extended break and focus on a different lifestyle. The circumstances surrounding his return, coupled with his established new career, make this a noteworthy chapter in the career of a player who has consistently been in the headlines, both for his on-field prowess and his off-field exploits.
