Kelvin Fletcher Bids Heartfelt Goodbye to Beloved First Calf
Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz share a poignant moment as they prepare to part with their cherished cow, Sonic, on Fletcher’s Family Farm. The couple, who raised Sonic from a calf, face the emotional task of sending him to slaughter after a life filled with milestones.
In a recent farm update, Kelvin opens up about the day’s arrival. “The day has arrived to say goodbye to our first-ever calf, Sonic, who’s heading off on his final journey,” he states. “This morning, we’re taking Sonic to slaughter. It’s bittersweet, really. It’s a bit of a weird one.”
Special Bond with Their First Cow
Kelvin reflects on the unique connection, noting differences from other animals. “I woke up this morning feeling a bit… it is different to a sheep,” he admits. With seven cows on the farm, Sonic stands out as number 001—their inaugural calf. “We’ll always remember Sonic,” Kelvin affirms. “They say the first is always the hardest, and then, who knows.”
The farewell carries extra weight as their pioneering calf. Kelvin highlights the pride in Sonic’s journey: a show winner in excellent condition after triumphs like the Cheshire show. “We’ve reared him, and he’s had a great life,” he says. “We’ve got so many amazing memories from him.”
Honoring the Full Circle of Farm Life
As they load Sonic onto the trailer, Kelvin emphasizes appreciation for the process. “It’s a privilege when you get to see the full circle, and it’ll be a real appreciation of when you do have the meat,” he explains. The family sells the meat with care, fostering a connection to food sources. “You want to honor your food and honor the life that’s provided that food,” Kelvin adds.
The moment proves surreal and anxiety-inducing. “Just talking about it was one thing, and then loading him in for the final time is a bit surreal,” Kelvin confesses, capturing the raw emotions of farm life.
