Snooker luminary Ken Doherty, who recently concluded a distinguished 36-year professional career, has identified the 2001 UK Championship final against Ronnie O’Sullivan as the most painful defeat he experienced. Despite reaching numerous finals and securing prestigious titles, including the World Championship, this particular loss in York stands out for its sheer dominance and the circumstances surrounding it.

A Career Defined by Peaks and Troughs

Ken Doherty, a former World Champion, retired from professional snooker earlier this year, marking the end of an era that began in 1990. Throughout his extensive career, the Irishman consistently competed at the highest level, capturing his first ranking title in 1992 and his last in 2006. Even in later years, he demonstrated his enduring class, reaching a ranking semi-final as recently as 2017.

Doherty’s career is adorned with significant achievements, including the coveted Triple Crown title at the 1997 World Championship. However, his journey was also punctuated by several near misses in major finals, a testament to the fierce competition he faced from the sport’s greatest players. He reached two Crucible finals, three UK Championship finals, and was runner-up at the Masters on two occasions.

The Humiliation of the 2001 UK Championship Final

Reflecting on his career, Doherty pinpointed the 2001 UK Championship final against Ronnie O’Sullivan as his most embarrassing defeat. The match, held in York, saw Doherty reach the final after an impressive run, overcoming strong opponents like Matthew Stevens and Stephen Lee. However, the final itself proved to be a one-sided affair.

“I’ve had a few bad defeats, but I think the most embarrassing one was probably in the UK final. I played so well to get to the final,” Doherty shared. “I got off to a terrible start against Ronnie O’Sullivan and he eventually beat me 10-1 and I was lucky to get one.”

The scoreline of 10-1 reflected O’Sullivan’s overwhelming dominance. After winning the second frame to make it 1-1, Doherty lost an astonishing nine consecutive frames, sealing his fate in what he described as a particularly galling experience.

Other Significant Near Misses and Tough Losses

While the UK Championship final against O’Sullivan remains the most difficult to stomach, Doherty acknowledged other finals that “got away.” These included:

  • 1998 World Championship Final: A loss to John Higgins.
  • 2003 World Championship Final: A closely contested 18-16 defeat against Mark Williams, which Doherty found particularly hard to accept.
  • Masters Finals: Two losses to John Higgins and Matthew Stevens, both ending 10-8.
  • UK Championship Finals: Besides the O’Sullivan match, he recalled a 10-9 loss to Mark Williams in 2002. He also mentioned a defeat against Stephen Hendry in 1994, where Hendry produced a remarkable performance with seven centuries in 10 frames to win 10-5.

Doherty emphasized the significance of Triple Crown events, stating, “It’s the big ones that you lose out on, the Triple Crown events they’re the ones that your career is defined by.” He added that while reaching these finals was an achievement, the losses often overshadowed the success.

The Defining Triumph and Lingering Disappointments

Despite the sting of these defeats, Doherty’s career was ultimately defined by his World Championship victory in 1997, where he defeated Stephen Hendry 18-12. This triumph stands as the pinnacle of his career and a moment of immense personal satisfaction.

“Winning the World Championship, that defined my career,” he stated. He also found satisfaction in defeating top players like Hendry, Higgins, and Williams in other finals throughout his career, proving his mettle against the best.

However, the memory of the finals he lost, particularly the lopsided defeat to O’Sullivan in the 2001 UK Championship, continues to linger. “But the ones that got away, you’re always perturbed by,” Doherty concluded, reflecting on the bittersweet nature of a long and storied career at the top of professional snooker.

Ken Doherty’s Ranking Title Wins

Doherty amassed a total of six ranking titles during his professional career:

  • 1993 Welsh Open: Defeated Alan McManus 9-7
  • 1997 World Championship: Defeated Stephen Hendry 18-12
  • 2000 Malta Grand Prix: Defeated Mark Williams 9-3
  • 2001 Welsh Open: Defeated Paul Hunter 9-2
  • 2001 Thailand Masters: Defeated Stephen Hendry 9-3
  • 2006 Malta Cup: Defeated John Higgins 9-8
