Distillers have expressed gratitude towards King Charles III, attributing his diplomatic efforts during a state visit to the US in April to the recent lifting of tariffs on Scotch whisky by the United States. The removal of these levies, which came into effect yesterday, is anticipated to provide a significant boost to an industry already exporting nearly £1 billion worth of product annually.

End of US Tariffs on Scotch Whisky

The United States, the most valuable global market for Scotch whisky, had imposed a 25 percent tariff on single malt Scotch for 18 months during Donald Trump’s first presidency, resulting in an estimated £600 million loss in exports for the industry. A subsequent 10 percent levy was introduced at the beginning of his second term, with plans to revert to 25 percent this year. However, these tariffs were dropped following the state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Donald Trump announced the removal of “all the restrictions” in “honour” of the royal couple, a move that has been widely welcomed by the Scotch whisky industry. John Swinney, a representative for the industry, predicted “significant benefit” for distillers, despite the US President imposing new tariffs on other goods.

Industry Impact and Economic Benefits

The Scotch Whisky Association’s international director, Ian Duddy, highlighted the positive implications of tariff-free trade returning to the US market. “The return of tariff-free trade for Scotch whisky in the US is welcome news for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,” Duddy stated. “As Scotch whisky’s most valuable global market, worth £933 million in 2025, the removal of tariffs provides greater confidence to invest, grow exports, and support jobs and communities across Scotland and the US.”

The benefits extend beyond the whisky producers themselves. Duddy elaborated, “From Kentucky to Speyside, this will not only benefit the Scotch and US whisky sectors, but our wider supply chains of cooperages, farmers, hospitality and retail.” The industry expressed its thanks to all parties involved in achieving this outcome, specifically acknowledging the King’s role during his state visit.

Broader Trade Implications

The agreement also means that US bourbon and the approximately £200 million worth of Kentucky bourbon casks imported annually to the UK for maturing Scotch will also be free from tariffs. This reciprocal arrangement is seen as a win for both Scotland and the United States, according to John Swinney.

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander echoed the sentiment, stating he was joining “all those raising a dram today for the efforts to reach this point.” The Scotch whisky industry is a significant economic contributor, supporting an estimated 41,000 jobs in Scotland and an additional 25,000 across the UK. The US market alone accounts for a fifth of Scotch whisky exports by value.

Context of Recent Trade Disputes

This development occurs against a backdrop of complex international trade relations. Notably, the US Supreme Court had previously declared Mr. Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs illegal earlier this year. However, the US administration has also recently imposed fresh import duties on over 60 countries, including the UK, citing concerns over inadequate measures to combat forced labour.

The removal of tariffs on Scotch whisky marks a positive turn for the sector, underscoring the importance of international diplomacy and its impact on global trade. The industry anticipates renewed growth and stability in its key export market.
