Lauren Price returns to the ring this Saturday in Cardiff to defend her IBF and WBC welterweight titles against Stephanie Piñeiro Aquino. Nearly 13 months have passed since her commanding victory over Natasha Jonas at the Royal Albert Hall, highlighting persistent challenges in women’s boxing scheduling.

Career Highlights and Inactivity Frustrations

Price, the Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo 2021, has fought just nine professional bouts in over three-and-a-half years. She dominated her first eight fights without losing a round and nearly shut out Jonas. Yet, securing quality opponents proves tough.

“It’s especially hard in women’s boxing,” Price states. “Early in my career, I fast-tracked to face Jessica McCaskill in my seventh fight and won a world title. Top challengers then demand high purses, stalling negotiations. Fighters often shift weight classes due to the limited pool.”

Promotional hurdles compounded issues. Price’s team at Boxxer faced contract uncertainties after their Sky deal ended. Trainer Rob McCracken guided her through the limbo.

“The whole year was frustrating,” Price admits. “I trained in Sheffield, but everything felt out of control. Rob advised patience, and I trust him completely.”

Current Fight and Broadcasting Boost

Price faces the undefeated Puerto Rican, whose 10-0 record comes from local bouts. “She’s dangerous—big, tall, tough, a toe-to-toe fighter,” Price assesses. “But I’ve faced similar styles from my amateur days worldwide.”

The Cardiff Arena bout, capacity over 7,000, airs on BBC Two. “Terrestrial TV reaches older fans without Sky,” Price notes. “The BBC supported me through the Olympics.”

Dream Match Against Claressa Shields

Price hints at a blockbuster clash with Claressa Shields, the top pound-for-pound female boxer. Despite Shields competing at heavyweight recently, talks target middleweight.

“We’ve discussed 160 pounds, possibly higher,” Price reveals. “We both want it. She’s a double Olympic champion like me at middleweight. I’d go to America first, then host in Wales—maybe a trilogy.”

Price remains loyal to Boxxer with three fights left. “If they back me, I’ll stay long-term,” she says. “I aim to maximize earnings, build a Welsh boxing legacy, and exit safely—targeting bigger venues.”

Personal Life Milestones

Beyond boxing, Price proposed to partner Carla after the Jonas fight. They plan a May 30 wedding in Abergavenny for about 110 guests. Carla runs a home care business.

“She’s driven and outside boxing, providing balance,” Price shares. “No honeymoon until year-end due to my short career focus.”

Raised by adoptive grandparents after early family hardships, Price cherishes their support. Her nan, still in Wales, skips live fights but celebrates victories.

“They loved me unconditionally and encouraged every dream,” Price reflects.

Outlook for 2026

After this defense on April 4, Price anticipates a packed year with weddings and multiple bouts. “A strong win kickstarts the climb,” she affirms. “I’m thrilled the fight is set.”
