Lena Headey, the actress who portrayed the formidable Cersei Lannister in HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones, has revealed her surprise at the intense fan reaction to her character’s infamous ‘Walk of Atonement.’ The scene, which depicted Cersei forced to march naked through the streets of King’s Landing as punishment, sparked considerable debate and online outrage among viewers.
Cersei’s Humiliating March
In the series, Cersei’s incestuous relationship with her brother Jaime Lannister is exposed to the city’s populace, leading to her public shaming by the Faith Militant, a zealous religious sect. The sequence shows crowds hurling refuse and insults at her as she walks barefoot and unclothed, a stark visual representation of her downfall. This pivotal moment was intended to highlight the consequences of her actions and her vulnerability in a patriarchal society.
The on-screen depiction of Cersei’s degradation resonated strongly with audiences, but the subsequent revelation that Headey utilized a body double for the most sensitive parts of the scene elicited a different kind of reaction – one that the actress found particularly bewildering.

Speaking in a recent interview, Headey, now 52, expressed her astonishment at the anger directed at her, particularly the sentiment that she had somehow deceived the audience. “I was really shocked by the anger, by this idea that I’d duped the audience,” she stated. She explained that the scale of the production, involving thousands of extras, made her own participation in the nudity challenging from a practical and emotional standpoint.
Headey elaborated on the demands of acting, especially in emotionally taxing roles. “Acting is a joy but it requires a lot of you. I wouldn’t have been able to do the emotional part of the job; I’d have been in full on defensive mode,” she commented. Her approach was to fully inhabit Cersei’s emotional state, which she felt would have been compromised had she been preoccupied with the physical act of performing nudity for an extended period.
