Despite significant improvements and strategic acumen from Ferrari this Formula 1 season, doubts persist regarding Lewis Hamilton’s prospects of securing an unprecedented eighth world championship. While the Scuderia has achieved two Grand Prix victories and nine total podiums in the first 11 rounds of the 2025 season – a marked improvement from their winless 2024 campaign – former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes Hamilton may not clinch another title.

Ferrari’s Resurgence and Hamilton’s Role

Ferrari’s development trajectory this year has been notably strong. The team has secured multiple victories, with Lewis Hamilton contributing five podium finishes, including his long-awaited first win as a Ferrari driver. Teammate Charles Leclerc has also secured a victory, his first since 2024, at the British Grand Prix. This resurgence positions Ferrari as a formidable competitor for the remainder of the season, aiming to challenge the dominance of rivals like Mercedes.

Montoya, while impressed by Ferrari’s operational efficiency and strategic planning, remains skeptical about Hamilton’s chances of reaching an eighth world title. “I don’t think he is going to be world champion again,” Montoya stated, suggesting that Hamilton might be content at this stage of his career. He elaborated, “His performances show he is on the right path, it shows Ferrari is on the right path and they’re doing an amazing job. They’re really being smart about how they go about their business and their strategies. And that is really cool to see.”

Challenges and Penalties Hampering Hamilton’s Campaign

As the season approaches its summer break, Hamilton trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 50 points. This deficit is partly attributed to points left on the table due to four penalties incurred across the last three events. These penalties, stemming from various incidents including a pit lane speeding offense in Hungary, highlight the fine margins and intense pressure of Formula 1 competition.

Montoya downplayed the significance of these penalties, framing them as consequences of pushing the limits. “If you get caught speeding, you are caught speeding. If you release the button too early, you release the button too early. You’re fighting for that microsecond and when you’re desperate for more, you go over. This is the tough reality of it,” he explained. Hamilton himself has acknowledged these issues, expressing a commitment to avoid further infringements. Following the Hungary race, he stated his intention to “try to make sure I don’t give them any reason to penalise me.”

Contrasting Views on Hamilton’s Motivation

Despite the setbacks, the underlying pace of both Hamilton and the Ferrari car has been a promising sign, even on circuits where the team did not anticipate strong performance. This suggests a robust development program and a car capable of fighting at the front.

However, not all former champions share Montoya’s assessment of Hamilton’s current mindset. Damon Hill, another former F1 champion, disagrees with the notion that Hamilton is simply “comfortable.” Hill posits that Hamilton’s competitive spirit is such that he would not easily accept a lesser role. “He’s going to win at anything he does. I don’t think it sits easily with him to back off,” Hill remarked, emphasizing Hamilton’s inherent drive to succeed.

The Broader Context of F1 Competition

The current Formula 1 season is characterized by intense competition, with teams like Ferrari demonstrating significant progress. The strategic decisions and on-track performance are crucial, especially as the championship battle intensifies. Hamilton’s ability to overcome the points deficit and navigate the remaining races will be a key storyline.

Ferrari’s smart approach to development and strategy, as noted by Montoya, provides a solid foundation. However, the ultimate success of Hamilton’s quest for an eighth title will depend on a combination of sustained performance, minimizing errors, and perhaps overcoming the strong form of his rivals, including the emerging talent like Kimi Antonelli.

Conclusion: A Tight Championship Battle Ahead

As the Formula 1 season progresses, Lewis Hamilton’s pursuit of a record-breaking eighth world championship remains a central narrative. While Ferrari’s advancements offer a strong platform, and Hamilton’s own determination is evident, external analyses suggest the path to the title is fraught with challenges. The coming races will be critical in determining whether Hamilton can surmount the current points gap and achieve this historic milestone, or if the competitive landscape of F1 will present a different outcome.
