The simple act of applying lipstick can offer a surprising window into a person’s psyche, revealing insights into self-perception, confidence, and how they choose to present themselves to the world. Far from being a superficial habit, the choice of lipstick shade and the very act of wearing it are deeply connected to emotional states and self-esteem, according to psychologist Patricia Sánchez.

The Emotional Connection to Lipstick Use

Psychologist Patricia Sánchez explains that the decision to wear lipstick, or any makeup, is often rooted in emotional motivation rather than being a fixed personality trait. “Rather than a personality trait as such, I’d say there’s a clear connection between self-esteem, empowerment, confidence, and the emotional state of women who wear lipstick every day,” she states. The ritual of applying makeup can also signify a deliberate act of self-care, a moment taken to connect with one’s femininity and enhance personal features.

Lips themselves hold significant symbolic meaning. Drawing attention to them can be a powerful way to assert presence and confidence. “Lips are a naturally captivating, feminine and distinctive feature,” Sánchez notes. “A striking shade like red or burgundy projects a woman who is confident, grounded, and determined—someone who isn’t afraid to make her mark.”

Decoding Bold Shades

A classic red lip, for instance, carries a rich history of symbolism, often conveying a sense of readiness and commitment to the day’s challenges. However, Sánchez cautions that even the most assertive shades can have varied underlying motivations. “The exact same true-red shade can sometimes mask a need for attention, a search for external validation, or underlying self-doubt,” she clarifies. The crucial insight, she emphasizes, lies not in the shade itself, but in understanding the “motivation behind it, and where is it coming from?”

The Nuances of Subtle Tones

Opting for softer, more subtle lipstick colors does not indicate a lesser degree of confidence or femininity. Sánchez suggests that lighter shades often reflect a “calmer, gentler nature,” but this tranquility can coexist with “a quiet, enduring strength.” The choice of color can also be influenced by life stages and moods.

“A woman might switch from one shade to another depending on where she is in her menstrual cycle, her mood, or the broader stage of life she finds herself in,” Sánchez observes. This fluidity highlights how lipstick choices can adapt to evolving personal circumstances and internal states.

The Psychology of Not Wearing Lipstick

In an era that often celebrates natural beauty and minimalist routines, the decision to forgo lipstick entirely also carries psychological weight. Sánchez suggests that for some, it signifies a comfortable and uninhibited relationship with their appearance. For others, however, it may stem from a desire to remain inconspicuous.

“It often stems from a need to stay under the radar—a subtle fear of drawing attention or standing out,” the psychologist explains. What might appear as a simple preference for a bare face could, in some instances, mask a deeper inclination to avoid notice. Phrases like “I look fine as I am” or “Makeup just isn’t for me,” when examined closely, can reveal underlying attitudes towards visibility and self-presentation.

Lipstick as an Accessory, Not a Crutch

Sánchez stresses that makeup should be an enhancement, not an emotional dependency. “Lipstick doesn’t boost your self-esteem or personal confidence; the power to feel magnetic lies within you,” she asserts. True confidence, she argues, originates from within, independent of external aids.

The psychologist advocates for cultivating inner self-worth first. “First, you reclaim your inner confidence—based on who you are without props or dressing up—and then you wear whatever makeup you fancy,” she maintains. Whether one feels empowered by a bold lipstick or equally strong with a bare face, the key is that the choice reflects an authentic sense of self.

Validating Diverse Choices

Ultimately, the psychology of lipstick is not about prescribing specific behaviors but about understanding the diverse ways individuals express themselves. “You can wear natural makeup and look gorgeous. You can wear bold, eye-catching makeup and look gorgeous. Or you can wear no makeup at all and still look gorgeous,” Sánchez summarizes. Each choice tells a unique and valid story about identity and comfort with self-expression.

The act of wearing lipstick, or choosing not to, is a reflection of how a person chooses to navigate the world and the space they feel comfortable occupying. It speaks to their relationship with their own image and how they project their inner state.

The Core of Self-Perception

Sánchez concludes that beauty is not derived from cosmetic products but from internal sources. “Beauty doesn’t come from a bottle or a lipstick bullet—it comes from your confidence, your sense of self, and how much you prioritise peace and self-care in your daily life,” she states. The most profound insights into personality and self-esteem come from understanding the personal narrative behind these choices, revealing a deeper connection to one’s own sense of being.
