Love Island USA Rocked by Racism Allegations Against New Contestant

The reality dating show Love Island USA is once again at the center of a racism controversy. This time, allegations have surfaced involving new contestant Alannah Keyser, who made her debut at Casa Amor on Sunday’s episode. Shortly after her arrival, a video emerged allegedly showing Keyser singing along to a song that includes a racial slur. Further complicating matters, a screenshot of a past social media comment purportedly featuring Keyser using the same word has also circulated.

Sources indicate that production has not yet issued a statement regarding the backlash or Keyser’s future on the program. The situation has prompted a strong reaction from viewers on social media platforms, with many demanding Keyser’s immediate removal from the series. Comments on X, formerly Twitter, include calls to “get alannah keyser off #loveisland NOW” and questions about whether production conducted thorough background checks, asking, “did production do a background check to make sure alannah isn’t a lil racist ’cause wtf was that.”

Defense Mounted Amidst Backlash

In response to the growing controversy, a friend of Alannah Keyser, identified as Nick Rogers, posted a video on TikTok on Monday to defend her. Rogers acknowledged the resurfaced clip and screenshots, stating his intention to offer his perspective on Keyser’s character. He described her as a “very caring and the nicest person ever” and asserted that she has “never exhibited any racist traits around me at all.”

Rogers further claimed that the screenshots were fabricated, expressing disbelief that Keyser would post such content. He suggested that the current advancements in AI technology could be used to manipulate such scenarios. Addressing the video of Keyser singing along to a track, Rogers admitted he could not definitively confirm if she uttered the slur. He emphasized the sensitivity of the word and agreed that its use by individuals who are not people of color is inappropriate. Rogers suggested that the video was recorded during a time when the word “was used a lot more freely,” citing the years 2016 and 2017 as examples.

Keyser’s father, Stephane, also spoke out in her defense to TMZ on Monday, refuting the racism claims. He described his daughter, who has studied at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, as an “educated sweetheart.” According to her father, the backlash and hate directed at Keyser are unwarranted, noting that the family has friends from diverse backgrounds. Keyser herself has not yet publicly addressed the allegations.

History of Similar Incidents on Love Island USA

This is not the first time Love Island USA has encountered racism allegations in its current season. In May, contestant Vasana Montgomery was removed from the show just days before the season eight premiere. Videos surfaced allegedly showing Montgomery using the N-word while rapping along to a track and on another occasion with a friend during a game. Sources close to the production informed the outlet that Montgomery, a business owner, was removed from the show, and that the social media videos had been private, explaining why production did not discover them during the screening process.

The eighth season of Love Island USA, hosted by Ariana Madix, premiered on Peacock on June 2. Following the cast reveal, the show released a statement on its Instagram account, advocating for positivity and respect within the community. The statement read: “The Villa runs on good vibes, and so does this community. We love seeing your reactions, opinions, and debates, but everyone deserves to feel safe and respected. This is a space for fun, not negativity – so keep it kind, keep it positive, and remember: this is LOVE Island!”

Past Controversies Emerge

The reality series has a history of similar incidents. Last year, contestant Yulissa Escobar was removed from the show due to her past use of racial slurs. Clips resurfaced of Escobar using the N-word while discussing ex-boyfriends, leading to fan outrage. She later issued an apology on Instagram, acknowledging her ignorance in using the word and recognizing the impact it carries due to its historical connection to trauma. Escobar stated she had taken time to reflect, learn, and grow from the experience.

Additionally, contestant Cierra Ortega was removed from the show last year after multiple racist posts from her Instagram account were uncovered. These posts, dating back to 2015 and 2023, included the use of a slur offensive to Chinese people. Ortega’s parents released a statement expressing their pain and emphasizing their belief in her capacity for honesty, growth, and grace, requesting compassion and decency from the public.
