San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones participated in a viral snowball fight in New York City earlier this week, drawing criticism from Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The Viral Snowball Fight
Jones posted a video of himself hurling snowballs during the chaotic event at Washington Square Park on Monday. He captioned the TikTok clip ‘Snowball launchmaxxing’ and responded to a fan praising his accuracy by calling his throws ‘absolute rippers.’
The fight erupted after a historic blizzard blanketed Manhattan, with some participants targeting police officers on the streets. No evidence suggests Jones aimed at law enforcement.
Mayor’s Strong Reaction
Mayor Mamdani expressed frustration over the incident. ‘Officers, like all city workers, have been out in a historic blizzard, keeping New Yorkers safe and cars moving. Treat them with respect,’ he stated. ‘If anyone’s catching a snowball, it’s me.’
Arrests and Police Pursuit
Authorities arrested social media content creator Gusmane Coulibaly, 27, on Thursday. Police charged him with obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor, and harassment, a violation.
The New York City Police Department released images of three additional suspects linked to pelting officers with snow. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the officers’ treatment as ‘disgraceful’ and ‘criminal.’
Jones’ Strong NFL Season
The 27-year-old Jones delivered a standout 2025 season with the 49ers, stepping in for injured starter Brock Purdy and guiding the team to a 5-3 record.
Trade rumors swirl as teams eye a starting quarterback, but the 49ers value their backup. General Manager John Lynch praised Jones this week: ‘Mac made this place better. He was outstanding this season. He picked us up in a huge way and it was a really fun process to watch him come in and the joy that he was playing with. He’s got an infectious attitude that affects everybody on our team.’
Drafted in the first round by the New England Patriots in 2021, Jones’ future with San Francisco remains uncertain amid potential offseason offers.
