January Transfer Window Closes Quietly for United

Manchester United concluded a low-key January transfer window with minimal first-team activity, as interim manager Michael Carrick focused on improving results rather than squad additions. The club’s attention shifted dramatically last month when Ruben Amorim departed, paving the way for Carrick’s interim appointment through season’s end.

Carrick’s immediate impact saw United secure three consecutive Premier League victories – defeating Manchester City 2-0, Arsenal 3-2, and Fulham 3-2. While senior signings remained absent, several youth players departed permanently or on loan before Monday’s deadline.

Permanent Departures for Academy Prospects

Sam Mather Joins Turkish Club

Winger Sam Mather completed a permanent transfer to Kayserispor on January 17. The 21-year-old, at United since childhood, previously had loan spells at Rochdale and Tranmere Rovers. His contract includes a 20% sell-on clause for future transfers.

Hugill and Bennett Exit

Striker Joe Hugill moved to Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock after failing to break into United’s first team. Defender Rhys Bennett joined Fleetwood Town permanently following his 2024/25 stint with the club.

Loan Deals Finalized Before Deadline

Amass Suffers Training Injury

18-year-old left-back Harry Amass joined Norwich City but sustained a serious injury during training. The defender previously spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Midfielder and Forward Moves

Defensive midfielder Toby Collyer (22) transferred his loan from West Brom to Hull City, while striker Ethan Wheatley (20) joined Bradford City for the season. Versatile attacker James Scanlon completed an 18:59 deadline move to Swindon Town for his first senior football experience.

Biancheri’s First Loan

19-year-old forward Gabriele Biancheri secured his maiden loan move, joining Rotherham United until summer.

Malacia’s Deadline Day Frustration

Defender Tyrell Malacia reportedly clashed with football director Jason Wilcox after a proposed deadline-day move to Turkey was blocked. The 26-year-old Dutch full-back, limited to one league appearance this season, was allegedly preparing to travel when the deal collapsed.

Sources indicate no formal agreement existed between clubs regarding Malacia’s transfer. His situation may change following Patrick Dorgu’s injury during the Arsenal match, which could sideline the defender for up to 10 weeks.
