Manchester United is reportedly exploring options beyond Lewis Hall for their left-back position, with Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys emerging as a potential target. This strategic shift reflects a broader emphasis on value for money under the new Ineos-led operation, a departure from previous transfer window strategies. The club is actively addressing squad needs across defense, midfield, and attack, with the left-back role being a particular focus due to ongoing uncertainties.

Joaquin Seys: A New Left-Back Prospect

As speculation continues regarding a move for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, Manchester United has reportedly made inquiries about 21-year-old Belgian defender Joaquin Seys. According to reports, the Red Devils have already contacted Club Brugge to ascertain Seys’s availability. Notably, Arsenal and Aston Villa have also expressed interest in the young player, indicating a competitive market for his signature.

Seys has garnered attention for his performances in the Belgian Pro League and even earned a surprise call-up to Belgium’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He featured in a quarter-final match against Spain during the tournament, showcasing his potential on an international stage. His inclusion highlights his rapid development and potential to become a significant player.

Manchester United’s Left-Back Situation

The need for a new left-back is underscored by the current roster. With Luke Shaw, 31, entering the final year of his contract and his future at Old Trafford uncertain, the club is seeking long-term solutions. Diogo Dalot is currently the only natural alternative at left-back available to manager Michael Carrick, after Patrick Dorgu was moved to a more effective wing role. This limited depth necessitates proactive recruitment.

Club Brugge is reportedly seeking around £30 million for Seys, a figure that is not expected to be a significant obstacle for Manchester United. However, the strong interest from fellow Premier League clubs, particularly Arsenal, could present a challenge in securing his transfer.

Youri Tielemans Transfer Hailed as a “Steal”

In separate transfer news, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has lauded Manchester United’s acquisition of Youri Tielemans, describing the £35 million transfer as an exceptional piece of business. Mikel expressed surprise at how the club managed to secure the playmaker for such a fee, considering his quality and potential.

Tielemans joined Manchester United shortly after the club secured Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million. The Belgian international’s transfer was facilitated by activating his release clause, and he reportedly impressed club officials with his strong desire to join Manchester United. Mikel, speaking on The Obi One Podcast, ranked Tielemans’ move as one of the best midfield signings of the summer transfer window.

Mikel’s Assessment of Tielemans

“For me, it’s Youri Tielemans,” Mikel stated when asked to evaluate the best midfield signings. “Honestly, how the f*** did Manchester United get him for £35m? That’s a f***ing steal. I watched him before and during the World Cup and you can see that this is a player.”

Mikel elaborated on Tielemans’ versatility and impact, highlighting his ability to play in multiple midfield roles (six, eight, or ten). This adaptability provides significant tactical flexibility for any team. “When you have a player that can play anywhere, it gives you the variety to change the way you want to play. Tielemans is that guy,” Mikel added.

The former Chelsea star also praised Tielemans’ offensive contributions, noting his goal-scoring ability and effectiveness from set pieces. He further commended the player’s proficiency on the ball and his tendency to retain possession. While acknowledging that Tielemans might not be the quickest player, Mikel emphasized his exceptional game intelligence and reading of the game, both with and without the ball.

“He is very intelligent with and without the ball. When I look at all the midfielders that have transferred to different clubs [this window], the best one is Tielemans,” Mikel concluded, reinforcing his belief in the significant value Manchester United secured.

Conclusion

Manchester United’s transfer strategy appears to be evolving, with a focus on securing promising talent at competitive prices. The reported interest in Joaquin Seys indicates a proactive approach to strengthening the squad, particularly in the crucial left-back position. Simultaneously, the acquisition of Youri Tielemans has been widely recognized as a masterstroke, highlighting the club’s potential to unearth significant value in the transfer market.
