Transfer Talks Intensify for Manchester United Goalkeeper
The prospect of Manchester United offloading goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer has significantly improved, with indications that transfer negotiations are progressing. The Cameroonian, aged 30, is among several players slated for departure from Old Trafford during the current transfer window. Onana spent the previous season on loan in Turkey with Trabzonspor, following a challenging period with the English club.
Trabzonspor Expresses Strong Interest in Permanent Deal
Despite having two years remaining on his contract, which is set to expire in 2028, the likelihood of a permanent transfer this summer appears to be increasing. Trabzonspor has shown a strong desire to secure Onana’s services on a permanent basis. Manchester United acquired Onana from Inter Milan in 2023 for a fee of £43.8 million and are seeking to recover some of that investment. While a profit on the transfer is improbable, Trabzonspor will still be required to commit substantial funds for the 53-time international.
Club President Confirms Ongoing Discussions and Financial Capability
President Ertugrul Dogan of Trabzonspor has confirmed the club’s continued interest and stated that they possess the necessary financial resources to facilitate the transfer. “We speak with Onana every day. We won’t have any financial difficulties,” Dogan stated. He further elaborated that while Trabzonspor is committed to reaching an agreement with Manchester United, they are prepared to explore alternative, more affordable options should negotiations falter.
“We’ll make the necessary sacrifices. I don’t think we will experience any setbacks. But if we do, we will find another goalkeeper of the same quality,” Dogan added. Reports indicate that Onana’s initial loan agreement did not include a buy option or obligation. However, wage demands have reportedly become a point of contention in the ongoing discussions. The situation could become more complex, with suggestions that Onana’s salary might increase following the club’s qualification for the Champions League.
