Manchester United has initiated discussions regarding the potential sale of forward Joshua Zirkzee, with Italian club Juventus reportedly showing strong interest. Zirkzee, who joined the Red Devils two years ago from Bologna for a significant fee, has struggled to consistently perform at Old Trafford. The club is reportedly willing to consider a loan deal with a £30 million purchase option, a move that would represent a financial loss on the initial investment.

Zirkzee’s Manchester United Tenure

The Netherlands international arrived at Manchester United with considerable expectation, having made an encouraging start by scoring the decisive goal on his debut against Wolves. However, his subsequent performances have largely failed to meet the high standards anticipated. Under various managerial tenures, including Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, Zirkzee has found it challenging to establish himself as a consistent starter or to fully realize his potential. While he showed flashes of promise and increased frequency of appearances under Michael Carrick, the club appears ready to move him on before the current transfer window closes.

Juventus’s Pursuit

Juventus has emerged as a leading contender to sign Zirkzee. The Serie A club is actively seeking a new centre forward after their pursuit of Randal Kolo Muani reportedly stalled. Kolo Muani, who spent the previous season on loan at Tottenham from Paris Saint-Germain, was deemed surplus to requirements by his parent club. With Juventus facing a pressing need for attacking reinforcements, their attention has shifted to Zirkzee. Reports suggest that Zirkzee’s representatives have responded positively to the overtures from the Turin-based club.

Transfer Details and Financial Implications

Manchester United is reportedly open to facilitating a move for Zirkzee that includes a loan arrangement coupled with a buy-out clause set at approximately £30 million. This figure is notably lower than the initial £36.5 million outlay made in 2024 to secure his signature. The club’s willingness to accept such terms underscores their desire to offload the player and potentially recoup some of their investment, even if it means a capital loss.

Striker Situation for Michael Carrick

Should Zirkzee depart, the striking options available to new permanent manager Michael Carrick would become notably thin. Benjamin Sesko would likely remain as the sole senior striker in the squad ahead of the upcoming season. However, Sesko himself has been dealing with a persistent shin injury. This injury caused him to miss several pre-season fixtures, including matches against Wrexham and Rosenborg, as he undergoes a rehabilitation program. The injury was aggravated during a match against Liverpool in early May.

Sesko’s Pre-Season and Upcoming Schedule

Despite his injury concerns, Sesko is expected to be fit enough to feature in an upcoming friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on August 8. Following this match, the Manchester United squad is scheduled to travel to Dublin for a six-day training camp. As part of their preparations, they are slated to play against Leeds United at Croke Park on August 12. The fitness of Sesko remains a key consideration for Carrick as he finalizes his squad for the new campaign.

Broader Squad Considerations

The potential departure of Zirkzee, coupled with Sesko’s injury issues, highlights the need for Manchester United to address their attacking depth. The club’s transfer strategy in the remaining days of the window will be crucial in ensuring Carrick has a competitive squad capable of meeting the demands of the upcoming season. Securing a new forward or ensuring the full recovery and availability of Sesko will be paramount.
