Manchester United is actively pursuing squad enhancements before the upcoming transfer window deadline, according to interim manager Michael Carrick. The club is reportedly in advanced discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Carlos Baleba, having submitted a bid of £65 million for the 22-year-old. Sources suggest a deal for Baleba is likely, indicating United’s intent to bolster their midfield options.
Squad Strengthening Efforts
Carrick confirmed the club’s objective to strengthen the team, stating, “We’re certainly working towards that and making the most of the situation that we have and trying to improve things and trying to move forward.” He indicated that the club aims to conclude the transfer window on a stronger footing than when it began. “So certainly trying to make the most of the opportunities to finish the window stronger than when we went into it and I think we’re in a good, good way to doing that so far,” he added.
The transfer window is set to close on September 1. Manchester United has already secured the signings of midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £85 million, alongside goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The club has experienced a notable lack of player departures this summer.
Interest in Defensive Reinforcements
Beyond midfield, Manchester United is also exploring options to reinforce their left-back position. The club is understood to be monitoring developments concerning Lewis Hall, currently at Newcastle, and Arsenal’s young prospect Myles Lewis-Skelly. This suggests a strategic approach to addressing potential weaknesses across different areas of the squad.
Marcus Rashford’s Situation
Regarding the future of Marcus Rashford, Carrick remained circumspect when questioned about the player’s commitment to the club. Rashford, who recently returned to training after a period away, has been a significant figure for Manchester United. He made his first appearance since December 12, 2024, in a pre-season friendly against AC Milan. The England international is expected to be part of the squad for the Premier League opener against Hull City.
Carrick expressed satisfaction with Rashford’s reintegration and performance, noting, “It’s been pretty obvious since Marcus came back in training with Kobbie (Mainoo) and Licha (Martinez) in Dublin that he’s come back fantastically well. You know, he’s enjoying his football. He looks fit, he looks sharp, he looks strong, he looks ready to play football. So I’ve been delighted with him since he came back.”
Rashford’s Versatility in Attack
Carrick acknowledged Rashford’s potential to operate as a central striker, a position where Manchester United may seek additional depth, particularly as a specialist alternative to Benjamin Sesko. While Rashford began his career at United in a striking role, he has predominantly excelled from the left wing. “Of course, he can play through the middle. He has done,” Carrick stated. “Wouldn’t say it’s necessarily his number one position, but he can do that and I think we’ve got forwards that give us that flexibility right across the frontline that we’ve used all of them pretty much in slightly different roles. So I think for us to have that option is really good moving through the season.”
Transfer Window Outlook
With the transfer window closing soon, Manchester United appears determined to finalize key acquisitions. The club’s strategy seems focused on both immediate squad improvements and long-term development, with Carrick’s comments underscoring a proactive approach to team building. The potential arrival of Carlos Baleba and the ongoing search for a left-back signal significant activity in the remaining days of the transfer period.
The club’s transfer activity so far, including the significant investment in midfield and goalkeeping reinforcements, sets the stage for a potentially busy conclusion to the window. The focus remains on strengthening the team to meet the demands of the upcoming season, with Carrick emphasizing the positive trajectory of their efforts.
