Legendary football commentator Martin Tyler, aged 80, recently participated in a symbolic kick-off at a pre-season match for his boyhood club, Woking. The event marked the official renaming of the club’s training facility to the Martin Tyler Performance Centre in his honour.

A Symbolic Return to the Pitch

In a heartwarming display of dedication to his lifelong club, Martin Tyler took to the field for the first few seconds of a training ground match involving Woking Academy against Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday. The iconic voice of football, known for his decades of commentary for Sky Sports, initiated the game with a ceremonial kick-off. Immediately following his action, a teammate strategically kicked the ball out of play, allowing Tyler to receive a standing ovation and be substituted. This pre-arranged substitution ensured the moment was a planned tribute rather than a reflection of his playing ability.

Honouring a Lifelong Fan and Club Figure

The special appearance was orchestrated to celebrate the renaming of Woking’s training grounds. Tyler, a devoted Woking supporter since childhood, has maintained a deep connection with the Surrey-based club for over six decades. His association began at the tender age of eight in 1953, and over the years, he has engaged with the club not only as a fan but also as a player and coach.

Tyler’s Enduring Connection to Woking

Reflecting on his lifelong bond with the club in a 2018 interview, Tyler shared how his early experiences in non-league football have profoundly shaped his career. He recounted his first journey to Woking’s Kingfield Stadium as a child, a trip that left an indelible mark. “We caught a bus, I think it was a No 437, which took us straight from just 200 yards from my house all the way to Kingfield, dropping us right outside the ground,” he recalled. “It must have seemed to be a huge amount to me and just being a part of that made a deep impression.” He vividly remembered watching a left-winger named Freddie Pink score, an experience that taught him the art of spectating.

Tyler also expressed his enduring affection for Woking’s traditional red and white halved kit, which has remained his favourite. He humorously noted his disappointment when the club briefly changed to an all-red strip. His own playing experience for the club fifteen years prior involved a kit with red shirts and white sleeves, reminiscent of Arsenal’s colours, meaning he never had the chance to wear the iconic Cardinal red and white halves during his playing days.

His early fandom involved avidly following the local newspaper to stay informed about the club’s fortunes. This immersion quickly taught him the emotional spectrum of supporting a team, experiencing both the elation of a 4-1 victory and the despair of a 4-1 defeat within his first two matches. “I learned very quickly being a fan is not all joy,” he commented.

The Martin Tyler Performance Centre

Woking’s academy manager, Matt Winter, highlighted the significance of the facility’s renaming. “Tonight is the renaming of our academy facility that we have here within the grounds of Woking College,” Winter stated. “It’s a really big occasion. A lot of work behind the scenes has gone in, in terms of upgrading the facility, to provide the best facilities for the players that are part of the academy here at Woking.”

Tyler’s Role in the Academy

Winter further elaborated on Tyler’s invaluable contribution to the academy. “Of course involving a real Woking legend, and a real football legend in Martin Tyler,” he said. Tyler’s involvement began through conversations with Winter, who shared a strong affiliation with the club and knew Tyler through mutual friends. “He brings another set of ears, his knowledge of football over decades and a really good figure to have around the place,” Winter explained.

The academy players have reportedly embraced Tyler’s presence. “The boys absolutely love having him here, listening to his knowledge and stories. He’ll come and speak to players on a one-to-one basis, help some of them with their on-field stuff as well as off-field as well,” Winter added. “He’s been a massive addition and I know the staff love having him around.”

Woking FC’s Current Outlook

The article also briefly touched upon the current management of Woking FC’s first team, which is led by former professional Jermain Defoe. Defoe took over in March and has guided the team to a record of two wins, four draws, and one loss in his tenure leading into the new National League season.

Conclusion

Martin Tyler’s ceremonial kick-off and the renaming of the Woking Academy facility serve as a fitting tribute to a man whose voice has narrated countless footballing moments and whose heart has always belonged to his boyhood club. His continued engagement with the Woking Academy underscores his deep-seated passion for the sport and his commitment to nurturing future talent.
