Jean-Philippe Mateta, the 28-year-old French striker from Crystal Palace, has grown increasingly frustrated as his potential £30 million move to AC Milan faces delays. Mateta has already agreed personal terms with the Italian club, but Palace insists on securing a replacement before allowing his departure. Negotiations point toward Wolves’ Norwegian forward Jorgen Strand Larsen as a possible incoming player.
Signs of Frustration on Social Media
Mateta’s impatience became evident on Saturday evening when he shared an Instagram story featuring only an angry-face emoji. Adding to the tension, he no longer follows Crystal Palace on the platform. His bio, written in French, states: “Ils comprendront un jour,” which translates to “They will understand one day.” These subtle signals highlight the striker’s desire to join AC Milan, where he could compete in the Champions League.
Palace’s Firm Stance on Replacement
AC Milan believes an agreement in principle exists with Palace, but the English club prioritizes squad stability. The transfer window closes at 7 p.m. on Monday, leaving little time for a resolution. Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed Mateta’s absence from the squad traveling to face Nottingham Forest on Sunday, emphasizing the need to protect both the player and the team amid ongoing speculation.
Glasner’s Explanation for Exclusion
Speaking on Friday, Glasner stated: “It’s nothing to do with the transfers; he is just not in the right place and doesn’t feel in the right place to play. We have to protect the team and protect him; he will not travel with us to Nottingham.”
He further elaborated: “Again, there is so much noise, so much speculation, so many things going on. We need every single player at their best, and he isn’t at his best right now with all the noise that happens. If someone has private issues where they can’t focus on football, then it makes no sense to play. He can’t help the team and perform at his top level. We decided it is better not to play him. We have to prepare if something happens.”
Club’s Recent Turmoil
This situation unfolds amid broader challenges at Crystal Palace. The club recently sold captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City in a deal valued at up to £30 million. Glasner previously criticized the club’s leadership in a press conference, leading to peace talks. He will remain in charge through the end of the season but plans to depart when his contract expires in June, opting not to sign an extension.
