Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the 2007 disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann from Praia da Luz, Portugal, encounters strong opposition from residents in Braunschweig, Germany, after relocating there. A petition circulates among neighbors demanding his departure from the area where he once owned a kiosk.

Neighbor Concerns Escalate

Local residents express growing unease over Brueckner’s presence. A mother of two, who chose anonymity, highlights her discomfort with both the convicted sex offender and the constant police surveillance outside his home. She states, “My husband says the police presence reassures him. But for me it does the opposite. When I see the surveillance every day, it reminds me who is living nearby.”

Brueckner’s Recent Movements

Following his release from prison in September 2025 after serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old American woman in the Algarve resort in 2005, Brueckner, aged 49, initially registered as homeless in Neumünster and received an apartment. Threats from locals prompted police to relocate him to Kiel, where he lived in a forest tent before briefly occupying a provided container. He now resides in a friend’s apartment in the same Braunschweig neighborhood.

Intensive Police Surveillance

Braunschweig police maintain round-the-clock monitoring of Brueckner. Spokesman Lars Dehnert explains, “The focus of our measures is to recognize and prevent any potential risks connected to Christian Brueckner at an early stage.” He notes no noteworthy incidents so far but cautions, “It cannot be excluded that dangerous events will occur.”

Each eight-hour shift involves two officers, accumulating over 8,000 hours of surveillance since his release at a significant cost and diverting experienced personnel from other duties. Brueckner, who relies on benefits, must wear an electronic monitoring tag for five years.

Brueckner’s Perspective

Brueckner claims residents in his new location wish him harm. He remarks, “Sometimes it feels as though people would prefer me dead. I ask myself whether that is humanity, whether those are Christian values. I cannot understand this coldness – that when someone is already on the ground, people want to kick them.” He maintains his innocence in the McCann case, asserting, “There will be no charges against me in the Maddie case. That is because I am innocent.”

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Although never charged in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, Brueckner faced trial last year in Braunschweig on three additional rape charges and two counts of child abuse, resulting in acquittal. A psychological expert classified him among the “absolute top league of dangerous offenders,” estimating a 30 to 50 percent chance of reoffending seriously within two years if released. Prosecutors have appealed the verdict, now under review by Germany’s Federal Court of Justice in Leipzig.
