Crime thriller enthusiasts should check out McMafia, the intense eight-episode series starring James Norton, now streaming on BBC iPlayer. This 2018 production delivers high-stakes drama centered on Alex Godman, a refined Englishman from a family of Russian mafia exiles. Alex builds a legitimate business empire, but a tragic death pulls him into organized crime to safeguard his loved ones.

What Happens in McMafia?

Alex Godman, raised in England by Russian mafia exiles, dedicates his life to escaping his family’s legacy. He establishes a successful business and starts a life with his girlfriend, Rebecca. A murder exposes buried secrets, forcing Alex into the criminal underworld. There, he grapples with his principles to shield his family.

Star-Studded Cast

James Norton portrays Alex Godman, delivering a standout performance alongside Merab Ninidze as Vadim Kalyagin and Juliet Rylance as Rebecca Harper. The ensemble includes David Strathairn as Semiyon Kleiman, Caio Blat as Antonio Mendez, and Alexey Serebryakov as Dimitri Godman. This international lineup adds depth to the global crime narrative.

Strong Viewer and Critical Reception

The series drew nearly 10 million viewers for its premiere, marking one of the BBC’s top drama launches. Critics awarded it a 71% rating, while audiences gave it 88%. Viewers praise its quality, with one stating, “Very well written, well researched and original, this show holds nothing back. Definitely a must-watch for those who crave a high quality production.”

Another viewer noted, “Season one of McMafia is outstanding! Riveting plot alongside some terrific acting, particularly from James Norton (Alex) and Merab Ninidze (Vadim).” A third commented, “A great drama with a brilliant international cast, a topical matter dealt with cleverness and without the usual clichés. No unrealistic hero or ridiculous villain, a precise description of 21st century globalised mafia. First class entertainment.”

Despite its success, the show ended after one season amid scheduling issues, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. All eight episodes are available now on BBC iPlayer, alongside other James Norton hits like Happy Valley, King & Conqueror, War & Peace, and Nowhere Special.
