The spirit of the 1980s MG Metro Turbo may be poised for a modern revival, as a new electric hot hatch concept, dubbed the MG Go, has been revealed. Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the concept draws significant inspiration from the iconic, turbocharged Metro Turbo, a car that also served as the foundation for the formidable Metro 6R4 rally car. MG, now under Chinese ownership, presented the Go as a preview of a production model slated for arrival in 2027, positioning it as a potential rival to established electric hatchbacks like the Renault 5 and the forthcoming Peugeot e-208 GTI.

Retro Design Meets Electric Powertrain

The MG Go concept sports a distinctly boxy, retro supermini design, directly referencing the squared-off aesthetics of 1980s hot hatchbacks. MG describes the concept as a “contemporary nod to sporting MGs that have come before,” citing not only the Metro Turbo but also the classic MGB GT and the early 2000s MG ZR as influences. This blend of historical design cues with an electric powertrain aims to capture the essence of MG’s sporty heritage while embracing future automotive technology.

Carlos Gotham, MG’s design director, explained the philosophy behind the Go concept. “With MG Go, we wanted to create something compact and contemporary, but also warm, expressive and immediately likeable, an embodiment of all that we admire about the MG brand,” Gotham stated. He emphasized that the design isn’t merely about nostalgia but about capturing the “clarity, charm and emotional appeal” of past MGs and reinterpreting them for relevance today, ensuring the vehicle possesses “strong charisma.”

Dimensionally, the MG Go concept measures approximately four meters in length, placing it in direct competition with vehicles like the Renault 5. Its design features aggressive elements such as broad wheel arches, a prominent body kit, large wheels, a subtle ducktail spoiler, and a low-slung front splitter, all contributing to its hot hatch persona. MG executives indicated that the concept offers a close representation of what the final production model will look like when it launches.

Following a Successful Formula

MG appears to be emulating the successful strategy employed by Renault with its electric R5. The reborn Renault 5 has achieved considerable popularity, particularly in the UK, where it has appealed to private buyers seeking a stylish and engaging electric vehicle, a segment often dominated by fleet registrations. MG aims to replicate this success by leveraging its own celebrated hot hatch legacy.

The company stated that the production version of the Go will “bring genuine aspiration and desirability to the electric mainstream” by employing a “clever mix of retro-futuristic design inspired by MG’s most elegant and expressive models from the mid-20th century.” This approach seeks to tap into the emotional connection many consumers have with iconic car designs, offering a compelling alternative in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.

The Legacy of the MG Metro Turbo

The MG Metro Turbo, produced between 1982 and 1990, was a significant car in the British automotive landscape. It is widely regarded as one of the pioneering hot hatches, combining compact dimensions with spirited performance. Powered by a 1.3-liter A-Series engine fitted with a Garrett T3 turbocharger, it produced approximately 93 horsepower and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 10 seconds.

Its distinctive styling, featuring a unique body kit, alloy wheels, and bold decals, set it apart from standard models. The car also benefited from Hydragas suspension, which contributed to its sharp handling characteristics and cemented its status during the performance car boom of the 1980s. Despite its impact, the Metro Turbo faced the common challenge of rust, meaning very few examples have survived in roadworthy condition. Records indicate that only a small number remain registered for road use, with a slightly larger number in a non-operational state.

Design and Development

MG has confirmed that the production model, which the Go concept previews, has been designed entirely by its team based in London. This includes the work of design director Carl Gotham, who was also instrumental in the design of the MG Cyberster EV roadster, a modern interpretation of the classic MGB.

While specific details regarding the production car’s performance figures, pricing, and full specifications are yet to be released, MG has indicated that the upcoming model will “showcase a mix of its sporty roots with the latest EV technology.” The unveiling of the Go concept alongside the MG Cyber SUV at the Goodwood Festival of Speed signals MG’s intent to expand its electric vehicle lineup with models that appeal to both performance enthusiasts and those seeking stylish, modern transportation.

Conclusion: A Potential Contender

The MG Go concept represents a bold statement from the brand, aiming to blend nostalgic design with cutting-edge electric technology. By drawing inspiration from the beloved MG Metro Turbo and targeting a segment currently energized by rivals like the Renault 5, MG is positioning itself to capture a significant share of the growing electric hot hatch market. The promise of a production-ready model arriving in 2027, designed with a clear focus on sporty heritage and contemporary appeal, suggests that the future of MG’s performance offerings could be as exciting as its past.
