Golfer Michael Block remains undeterred by an eight-shot deficit heading into the weekend of the U.S. Senior Open at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Known for his engaging personality and recent surge in popularity, Block expressed his determination to contend for the championship, emphasizing his goal is to win, not merely to participate.

Block’s Confidence and Approach to the Weekend

Despite trailing by a significant margin, Michael Block, a 50-year-old teaching professional from Mission Viejo, California, conveyed a strong sense of self-belief when addressing reporters after his second round. When questioned about his strategy for the remainder of the tournament, Block stated unequivocally, “Go deep; win. That’s all I’m here for.” He acknowledged his fortunate position to be competing in the event and praised the challenging Scioto Country Club course.

Block admitted that his performance through the first two days had not met his highest standards, particularly with his putting. “I get to really play very well the first two days, to be very honest with you. I haven’t made very many putts, maybe any,” he commented. “The game’s been about a C; C is being generous.” However, he remains optimistic, believing that an elevated performance could change his fortunes. “So if I can pull an A out for the Saturday and Sunday rounds, I can contend,” Block asserted.

Challenges with Scioto’s Greens

When pressed about the reasons behind his putting struggles, Block pointed to the distinctive characteristics of Scioto’s greens. He explained that the undulations and significant speed differentials between uphill and downhill putts have proven difficult to adapt to. “It’s the greens,” he stated. “I’m just trying to get comfortable, to be honest. If I knew the greens were this undulated and the speeds were so off between uphill and downhill — that’s where I’ve been struggling because when it’s uphill, it’s rolling at an 8, and when it’s downhill, it’s rolling at a 13 or 14. So I’m not used to that, and my feels are off for sure.”

This lack of putting confidence has impacted his overall game. “Once that’s off, you start losing some confidence. When you lose confidence in your putting stroke or your speed control, it becomes very difficult to make any birdies. I’ve just been relying on my full swing, which is normally the opposite,” Block elaborated. This reliance on his driving and iron play, typically a strength, has been necessary to compensate for his putting woes.

Motivation from the Leaderboard Position

The prospect of being eight shots behind the leader has not dampened Block’s competitive spirit; instead, it has fueled his ambition. “Huge. I’m not here to finish 40th,” Block declared emphatically. He reiterated his serious intent to compete for the title, having already achieved his initial goal of making the cut.

Block outlined his aggressive mindset for the upcoming rounds. “I’m going to go out tomorrow. I’ve made the cut, which was obviously very important, but at the same time, I’m going to go out there tomorrow, and I’m going to fire. I’m going to absolutely fire at every pin I can and be so much smarter,” he explained. He acknowledged the need for strategic shot-making, particularly around challenging pin positions often found near the edges of the greens.

His plan involves taking calculated risks and aiming for low scores. “Obviously I’m not going to go right of a tucked pin, which I’ve seen a lot — you know, pins have been three off the edges. But I’m going to get after it. I’m going to shoot a deep number tomorrow, put myself in contention for Sunday, and go from there.” This determined outlook suggests Block is prepared to attack the course in pursuit of a remarkable comeback victory at the U.S. Senior Open.

Block’s Popularity and Player Reception

Beyond his on-course aspirations, Michael Block has been a notable figure at the U.S. Senior Open, drawing significant attention. He has reported a positive reception from his fellow competitors, which he feels validates his presence in the field. This camaraderie among players, combined with the opportunity to compete on a prestigious course, contributes to his overall enjoyment and motivation.

Looking Ahead: The Final Rounds

As the U.S. Senior Open progresses, all eyes will be on Michael Block to see if he can translate his confident words into a strong performance. His journey from a teaching professional to a draw at a major championship highlights his resilience and unwavering belief in his abilities. The weekend promises exciting golf as Block aims to overcome the odds and challenge for the championship title.
