Michael Vaughan, former England captain, has stated that the national team must begin winning trophies to validate the strategy of appointing high-profile, ‘big vibe’ personalities to coaching roles, particularly highlighting the recent appointment of Kevin Pietersen as a white-ball consultant. Vaughan believes that while Pietersen’s coaching experience is limited, his immense knowledge of batting and winning makes him a valuable, albeit risky, addition to the England setup.
Pietersen’s Risky but Intriguing Role
The arrival of Kevin Pietersen as a specialist limited-overs mentor, commencing work on Monday, has raised eyebrows, especially given England’s recent success in white-ball cricket. The team has secured 17 victories in their last 19 completed T20 internationals and has recently claimed series wins in ODIs against Sri Lanka and India. Despite this, Vaughan sees the partnership between Pietersen and white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum as an interesting, albeit unconventional, move.
‘I like it, it’s quirky. It’s a risk, it has to be a risk because you’re not too sure what you’re going to get because Kev’s not done a great deal of coaching,’ Vaughan commented. He elaborated on Pietersen’s strengths, stating, ‘But his knowledge of batting, his knowledge of winning, his knowledge of playing at the right intensity at the right moments, there’s no-one been better in my time playing for England. He’ll add that.’
Vaughan noted that England, under Rob Key’s leadership, has consistently opted for prominent personalities in their backroom staff. He contrasted this with other successful international teams that operate with less public-facing coaches. ‘But England have gone for this and have done under Rob Key for a while now, he likes the big vibe of personality. They’ve got to start winning trophies, to justify all these decisions and, let’s be honest a huge amount of money spent.’
Surprise at White-Ball Appointment
Pietersen, who was controversially sacked by England in 2014 alongside coach Andy Flower following player-coach disputes, is returning to the international fold. Vaughan expressed that he was not surprised by Pietersen’s return to English cricket, feeling that his past treatment was unfair. ‘No, I’m happy he’s back in English cricket because 2014 I always felt that Kev was dealt an iffy hand. Kev brings a lot of things on himself but there are many others who have done equally silly things and have been allowed back into English cricket,’ Vaughan explained.
However, Vaughan admitted to being surprised by the specific nature of the appointment. ‘I was actually surprised they’ve brought him into the white-ball set-up. I thought the Test team would have approached him. The white-ball team over the last year have been doing quite well. T20s, No.1 in the world. 50-over team, back on track.’ He suggested that Pietersen’s influence might extend to Test batsmen who also play limited-overs formats.
Ollie Robinson and the Ashes Challenge
Speaking in his capacity as a promoter for the Barclays Knight-Stokes Cup, a state school cricket competition, Vaughan also shared his views on England’s bowling prospects for the upcoming Ashes series against Australia. He identified Ollie Robinson as a bowler who will likely cause significant concern for the Australian team.
Robinson’s recent performances in four Test matches yielded 28 wickets at an exceptionally low average. ‘It’s just so natural for Ollie Robinson. He just runs in and hits that length naturally,’ Vaughan observed. He acknowledged potential challenges, such as adapting to hotter conditions and bowling with the Kookaburra ball in subsequent spells or days, but remained confident in his effectiveness in the UK.
‘But here in the UK, I wouldn’t want to face him. And the Aussies will know next summer they’ll have to try and overcome him one of two ways,’ Vaughan stated. He outlined two potential strategies for Australia: either a technically sound approach to nullify Robinson or an aggressive tactic, such as Travis Head opening the batting to disrupt his rhythm. ‘They’ll have to have someone who completely nullifies him technically to see him off or you go the risky game which is Travis Head at the top to try and whack him out of his length. I’ll be intrigued to see which way they go.’
Vaughan praised the overall balance of England’s current attack, noting its diverse capabilities. However, he cautioned against over-exaggeration, particularly given the opposition faced in recent series. ‘I like this attack a lot because it’s got all the different variables that you need. I think we’ve got to be a bit wary of bigging them up too much because of what they’ve bowled against (Pakistan). But if they can keep their mentality and fitness and realise the balls they’ve bowled in this series are going to challenge every batting unit in the world, they will have things covered pretty well.’
He concluded his thoughts on bowling by emphasizing the importance of fundamental Test cricket skills: ‘If you cover the basics in Test cricket, it just generally gets you into a good position in most games and series.’
Batting Order Considerations for South Africa Tour
Looking ahead to England’s challenging Test series in South Africa, Vaughan discussed potential batting order adjustments. He noted that captain Joe Root would need to confer with new coach Stephen Fleming regarding team selection, particularly concerning the accommodation of Jacob Bethell upon his return from knee surgery.
While Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence made strong cases for inclusion against Pakistan, Vaughan expressed a preference for Emilio Gay to retain his opening position. ‘Three 50s in his first six games, and some of the conditions have been pretty tough for batting. I don’t think he’s completely stamped his name in that first Test in South Africa because to do that you need to get hundreds,’ Vaughan reflected. ‘One hundred would have probably guaranteed that he played the whole winter. He’s looked okay. Looked like he can play at this level, so I’d certainly start with him.’
Vaughan highlighted the disruption that changes could cause to established batting positions. ‘Other permutations (mean) manoeuvring people out of position. So, that means opening the batting with someone who doesn’t open, or hasn’t done too much opening the batting.’ He reiterated his support for Gay, stating, ‘Emilio Gay is an opening batter, so I would stay with him for a period. On the South Africa tour, we will find out a lot more about him, a lot more about the team because it’s going to be more challenging.’
