Lionesses’ Star Honored with MBE Following Euro 2025 Triumph

Michelle Agyemang, a pivotal player for the England Lionesses, has been awarded an MBE less than a year after her exclusion from a Royal Family social media post celebrating the team’s Euro 2025 final appearance. The prestigious recognition comes for her significant contributions to football.

Royal Family Post Sparks Controversy

The incident occurred when King Charles congratulated the Lionesses on reaching the Euro 2025 final. Despite Agyemang playing a crucial role in their dramatic advancement, including an equalizer in the 96th minute against Italy that sent the match to extra time, her image was notably absent from the 19 photographs accompanying the King’s message. This omission drew considerable criticism and disappointment from fans on social media platforms.

Numerous social media users ed their confusion and frustration. Comments included questions like, “Where is Michelle? I think you need to update your photo,” and “Uhm I’m sorry you forgot someone????” Another user directly asked, “Following their semi-final success… where’s Michelle Agyemang?” The sentiment was echoed by others who questioned the oversight, with one posting, “Your royal highness with all due respect where is Agyemang?” and another stating, “Nice message but shame Michelle Agyemang isn’t on the pic.”

Agyemang’s Impact and Recognition

Agyemang, now 20, was the youngest player in the England squad and was named the Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2025. Her vital goals, including a crucial equalizer against Sweden in the previous round, were instrumental in the Lionesses’ journey. The team ultimately retained their European title by defeating Spain on penalties.

In a message issued during the tournament, King Charles had conveyed his and his wife’s warmest congratulations to the Lionesses on reaching the World Cup final, sharing best wishes for the upcoming match. He acknowledged the team’s inspirational impact both on and off the pitch, noting the pride and respect shared by both nations involved.

Agyemang’s Perspective on Team Unity

Despite the earlier social media oversight, Agyemang has consistently emphasized the strong collective spirit within the Lionesses squad. Speaking in August 2025, she highlighted the inclusive nature of the team, stating, “Everyone, no matter your role, the backroom staff and the staff behind the staff, everyone is valued in this team, and you can see it with the way we celebrated. We all did it together. To see it come off in the end shows how together we were, and I’m so grateful that we have such a good team around us, and it made it so special.”

The awarding of an MBE formally acknowledges Agyemang’s significant achievements and her growing influence in the sport.
