Country music star Morgan Evans is set to join the judging panel of the upcoming season of Australian Idol, scheduled to air in 2027. The Newcastle-born singer-songwriter will step into the role previously held by radio personality Kyle Sandilands. Evans will bring his international experience to the panel, which also includes original judge Marcia Hines and acclaimed artist Amy Shark. Together, they will mentor and evaluate aspiring musicians vying to become Australia’s next music sensation.

Morgan Evans’ Journey and Role on Australian Idol

Morgan Evans, a globally recognized artist with over a billion streams to his name, expressed his enthusiasm for joining the competition. Speaking on the television program Sunrise, Evans clarified his approach to judging, stating he has no intention of adopting a deliberately harsh persona. “I’m not going to be the mean guy. I have no interest in doing that for the sake of it,” Evans remarked. However, he emphasized the importance of constructive criticism, adding, “But at the same time, I think if I can say something that saves someone five years of working something out, I feel like that is the kindest thing I can do.”

Evans’ career trajectory includes his self-titled debut album in 2014, followed by significant international success with his 2018 album, Things That We Drink To. This album featured the platinum-certified hit “Kiss Somebody” and the popular track “Day Drunk,” opening doors to extensive touring across North America and Europe. He has also headlined major festivals like CMC Rocks and achieved sold-out performances at the Sydney Opera House, particularly following the release of his personal song “Over For You.” His most recent album, Steel Town, was released in 2026 after a period of reflection and reconnection with his hometown.

The 41-year-old artist has a prior connection to the Australian Idol stage, having performed his single “Letting You Go” during the grand finale of the 2026 season. Evans believes his own experiences performing under pressure will enable him to connect with the contestants’ challenges. “I’m so familiar with what that feels like. I’ve been on shows and in situations like this in my career so I know the nerves that come along with that,” he stated.

Advice for Aspiring Artists

When asked about his advice for emerging talent, Evans stressed the significance of authenticity and self-discovery. “It’s about finding yourself, your unique thing that makes you special,” he explained. “There’s so many great singers, so many great songwriters in the world, but there’s only one of you. And I think the closer you can get to that with your song choice, the way you use your voice, the way you dress, the way you present, I think that’s the ultimate goal for all us.” This philosophy highlights his intention to guide contestants toward embracing their individuality.

A New Era for Australian Idol

Majella Hay, Seven’s director of unscripted content, welcomed Evans to the panel, describing him as an ideal fit for the show’s evolving landscape. “It’s a new era for Australian Idol. Morgan is the real deal. He’s one of the few homegrown artists to crack Nashville and, with more than a billion global streams, he is an Aussie success story. He’s the perfect addition to the line-up,” Hay commented. The program aims to discover and nurture the next generation of Australian music stars, building on its legacy of launching successful careers.

Australian Idol has a proven track record of identifying and promoting significant talent, with past contestants including Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy, Matt Corby, Anthony Callea, Stan Walker, Casey Donovan, and Courtney Act. The show’s return in 2027 will feature Ricki-Lee, a former contestant herself, and entertainment presenter Scott Tweedie as hosts. The competition is set to broadcast on Channel 7 and stream on 7plus.

Conclusion

The addition of Morgan Evans to the Australian Idol judging panel signals a fresh direction for the long-running singing competition. His international success, combined with a commitment to fostering genuine talent and authenticity, positions him to offer valuable insights to the contestants. As the show prepares for its 2027 return, the new-look panel, featuring Evans alongside Marcia Hines and Amy Shark, is poised to guide the search for Australia’s next music superstar.
