NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has publicly defended the attendance of former President Donald Trump at a New York Knicks game held at Madison Square Garden, an event that reportedly caused significant disruptions in Midtown Manhattan. The former President’s presence drew considerable attention, with reports suggesting that security measures led to fans arriving hours earlier than usual and the cancellation of a planned fan watch party.
During an interview on the program Inside the NBA, host Ernie Johnson inquired about Trump’s visit. Commissioner Silver countered criticism by emphasizing the unifying power of sports. He noted that Trump has a long-standing affinity for the Knicks, having been a fan and a regular attendee of games for many years.
A Longtime Fan’s Return
Silver recounted that Trump received an invitation from Knicks owner Jim Dolan and accepted. “I think that’s what makes sports so special, especially when there’s so much that divides people,” Silver stated. He further elaborated, reminding the panel of Trump’s past attendance, “You guys remember when you played here back in the old days, he had courtside seats. He was here all the time… He’s a genuine Knicks fan. And so, yes, there’s some inconvenience to the fans, but looking around this arena, it’s packed.”
However, the commissioner’s remarks appeared to elicit muted reactions from his co-hosts, former NBA stars Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal, as well as analyst Kenny Smith. Social media users observed their seemingly unenthusiastic expressions, interpreting them as a lack of agreement with Silver’s assessment.
Public Reaction and On-Court Events
Online commentary quickly focused on the facial expressions of Barkley, O’Neal, and Smith during Silver’s explanation. One user on X (formerly Twitter) expressed a strong opinion about Silver’s tenure as commissioner, stating, “Adam Silver is the worst commissioner in pro sports history. Look at the disgust on everyone else’s face.” Another commenter highlighted the visual aspect, observing, “Please look at Shaq, Kenny and Chuck’s faces the whole time Adam Silver is talking about President Trump. Earlier in the evening, Trump was seen on the jumbotron during the national anthem, appearing to grin amidst a chorus of boos. He was later observed in conversation with Commissioner Silver in an executive suite, an arrangement facilitated by Dolan, who is also a Republican donor.

While Ernie Johnson’s political leanings are not widely publicized, he has previously stated he did not vote for either major candidate in 2016, instead backing John Kasich. He expressed disappointment in the tone of that election cycle, framing his views through his Christian faith.
Charles Barkley has historically voted Democrat and has been a vocal critic of Trump on various issues, including immigration. However, he has also expressed dissatisfaction with liberal political strategies.
Shaquille O’Neal has previously described Trump as a friend and a “straight-up guy,” characterizing their relationship as personal. O’Neal also participated in a voter registration drive with Michelle Obama in 2020.
Kenny Smith’s political affiliations are less clear. In 2020, he joined his colleagues in walking off the set of Inside the NBA in solidarity with players who participated in a boycott during the Black Lives Matter protests.
When questioned by a reporter before departing on Air Force One, Trump downplayed any negative reception. “I thought great. I thought it was amazing, actually. It was I think mostly cheers,” he stated.

The Knicks ultimately lost the game to the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 115-111. Despite the loss, the Knicks maintain a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals, with the next game scheduled for Wednesday at the Garden.
