World Cup 2026 Sees Early Exits for Haiti, Turkey, and Tunisia
North America is currently hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and a significant rule change has already led to the elimination of three national teams after only two group-stage matches. Haiti, Turkey, and Tunisia have all been mathematically removed from contention due to a new FIFA regulation that prioritizes head-to-head results.
While several nations, including Mexico, Germany, and the United States, have already secured their progression to the knockout stages, these three teams find themselves unable to advance. The revised FIFA rules have fundamentally altered how tiebreakers are applied when teams finish level on points.
Haiti’s Historic Campaign Cut Short
Haiti, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, experienced a difficult start to their campaign. An opening 1-0 defeat against Scotland was followed by a comprehensive 3-0 loss to Brazil. This left them at the bottom of Group C with zero points.
Previously, goal difference could have offered a path to qualification as a best third-place finisher, even with a loss to Scotland. However, the new FIFA rule dictates that head-to-head points are now the primary tiebreaker. Having lost to Scotland, Haiti can achieve a maximum of three points. Their inferior head-to-head record against Scotland makes it impossible for them to climb above them in the standings, confirming their last-place finish in the group.
Turkey’s Knockout Hopes Dashed
Turkey faces an identical situation in Group D. Despite pre-tournament optimism, they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Australia in their first match, followed by a surprising 1-0 loss to Paraguay. Both Australia and Paraguay currently sit on three points, with the USA leading the group on six points.
As Turkey has lost to both Australia and Paraguay in head-to-head encounters, they are unable to surpass either team in the group standings, irrespective of future results. This confirms their elimination and destined last-place finish.
Tunisia Becomes Third Nation Eliminated
The latest team to be officially knocked out is Tunisia. Their tournament began with a significant 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Sweden. This was compounded by a commanding 4-0 victory for Japan in their subsequent match.
With the head-to-head rules now paramount, Tunisia cannot finish above Sweden in the group, confirming their early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
