A groundbreaking regulation now impacts every petrol and diesel driver across the UK, effective from February. Motorists can access the government’s Fuel Finder tool to pinpoint the lowest fuel prices at nearby stations.
Mandatory Price Reporting Requirements
Fuel stations must update their prices within 30 minutes of any changes for E5 or E10 unleaded petrol, diesel, and HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil). This system aims to empower drivers during the ongoing fuel price challenges by highlighting the most affordable options quickly.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer encourages vehicle owners to utilize the “cheap fuel finder” scheme to reduce running costs.
Emerging Challenges with the System
Despite its potential, reports indicate the tool may not consistently display the lowest prices in an area. Some drivers arrive expecting savings only to encounter higher costs. Analysis reveals that up to 15% of registered retailers have yet to report any pump price changes since the launch.
Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, notes that the current service is “falling far short of what’s needed,” urging swift improvements.
Government’s Response and Savings Potential
A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson highlights the tool’s benefits, stating it could save car-owning households around £40 annually at the pumps. They added: “We are acting at pace to ensure that all fuel retailers register and report prices on Fuel Finder. In the last week, we have secured Asda reporting their prices, and we are working with major search engines to integrate Fuel Finder data. Fuel Finder will play a crucial part in our work to tackle the cost-of-living head on, with potential savings for households who own a car of around £40 a year at the pump.”
