A popular social media health trend promotes replacing statins with 24-month aged garlic to manage high cholesterol levels. Dr. Tosin revealed that even family members now carry garlic cloves daily for consumption. She provided clear guidance on this approach.

Expert Advice on Statins and Garlic

Dr. Tosin emphasized the importance of prescribed medications. “If you’ve been prescribed statins by your GP, that’s for a reason. It can prevent cardiovascular events, diseases to your heart and your blood vessels in the future,” she stated.

While acknowledging potential benefits, she noted scientific evidence remains inconclusive. “There have been studies that have looked into how taking garlic can possibly lower high cholesterol levels. However the results from these studies have been mixed and the results definitely don’t outweigh the benefits we know statins can provide,” Dr. Tosin explained.

Affordable Garlic Option

Garlic bulbs, typically sold in packs of three or four, cost around 80p at major supermarkets, making it an accessible alternative for those exploring natural remedies.

Addressing Statin Side Effects

Many patients experience side effects from statins and seek alternatives. Dr. Tosin advised consulting a healthcare provider. “Please speak to your doctor because there are lots of options that we can explore,” she urged.

Health authorities indicate five statin varieties exist in the UK, and patients may need to try different types to find the best fit.

Common Statin Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sick
  • Feeling unusually tired or physically weak
  • Digestive issues, such as constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion or flatulence
  • Muscle pain
  • Sleep problems
  • Low blood platelet count

Role of Statins in Heart Health

Statins lower cholesterol levels, combating the ‘silent killer’ that often shows no symptoms but risks heart attacks. Physicians prescribe them to individuals with cardiovascular disease, family history, or insufficient lifestyle improvements. Patients take a daily tablet, with dosage tailored to needs, often requiring lifelong use to maintain results.
