Pole vault champion Nina Kennedy has been selected to carry the Australian flag at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Kennedy, a gold medalist in Birmingham and a world champion, will lead the Australian contingent into the stadium. Para-swimmer Tim Hodge will also play a significant role, carrying the King’s Baton during the ceremony.

Kennedy Leads Australian Team as Flag Bearer

Nina Kennedy, the reigning Commonwealth Games pole vault champion, has been honored with the prestigious role of carrying the Australian flag at the 2026 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Glasgow. Her selection marks a significant moment for the athlete, who is also preparing to defend her title in the pole vault competition. Kennedy is among the first members of the Australian athletics team to arrive in Glasgow, as the track and field events are scheduled to commence on the fourth day of the Games.

Expressing her profound pride, Kennedy stated, “I am so proud to follow in the footsteps of so many great Australians who have carried the flag before me. The Commonwealth Games have always meant so much to me; it’s where I won my first medal back in 2018.” This will be her third Commonwealth Games appearance, and she highlighted the unique opportunity this role presents. “This is my third Games, and I’m lucky enough to be defending my title. My final isn’t until later in the week, so I’ll get a bit of a sleep-in the morning after. I’ve worked with our team to make sure I’m as prepared as I can be, and there’s no version of the Games where I’d miss the chance to carry that flag.”

A Stellar Career Leading to Glasgow

Kennedy’s athletic journey has been marked by remarkable achievements. She secured a silver medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games four years prior to her gold medal win in Birmingham. Since then, her career has soared, including breaking the Australian record, clinching the world championship title in 2023, and achieving Olympic gold in 2024. Despite facing a setback with a torn hamstring that disrupted her 2025 season and prevented her from defending her world title, Kennedy has made a strong comeback in 2026. Just two weeks ago, she set a new national record for the tenth time in Monaco, demonstrating her resilience and continued dominance in the sport.

Reflecting on her journey, Kennedy shared the deep significance of this honor: “I’ve had a long road with injuries to get back to this point, so to be trusted with this now, on top of everything else so far this season, means more than I can really put into words.”

Tim Hodge to Carry the King’s Baton

Joining Kennedy in a prominent ceremonial role is para-swimmer Tim Hodge, another reigning gold medalist. Hodge has been tasked with carrying the King’s Baton during the opening ceremony. His international career began in Glasgow at the 2015 Para Swimming World Championships when he was just 14 years old. The 2026 Games will mark his third Commonwealth Games appearance, where he aims to defend the SB9 100m backstroke gold medal he won in Birmingham.

Hodge expressed his excitement about participating in the ceremony: “I’ve been lucky enough to compete at two Commonwealth Games already, and I’ve watched the team come into the stadium both times and felt so much pride watching the green and gold walking in. To now have that role myself, to have it happen in Glasgow of all places, the same city where I made my international debut, means the Games already feel special.” He added, “It’s the first time that I’ll march too. I’m usually competing first day. I can’t wait to feel the excitement.”

The Significance of the King’s Baton Relay

The King’s Baton Relay is a traditional prelude to the Commonwealth Games. This year’s relay commenced in March of the previous year at Buckingham Palace, where King Charles III placed his message into the baton destined for Scotland. A notable change for the 2026 Games is that each participating nation’s baton contains a single word of the King’s message, which will be collectively read aloud by the monarch at the opening ceremony. This tradition, which began with the 1958 Cardiff Games, five years after Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, marks the first time a King’s baton has been used for the Commonwealth Games.

Looking Ahead to the Games

With the opening ceremony approaching, Kennedy and Hodge are set to embody the spirit of the Commonwealth Games for Australia. Kennedy’s journey from a promising young athlete to a world and Olympic champion, overcoming significant injuries, makes her a compelling figure to lead the team. Hodge’s return to Glasgow, the city of his international debut, adds a layer of personal significance to his role in carrying the King’s Baton.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games promise to be a significant event, celebrating athletic achievement and international camaraderie. The roles of flag bearer and baton carrier underscore the importance of these Games and the athletes who represent their nations on the global stage.
