NYC Resident’s Unique Disney Escape Routine
For Sydney Stinner, a 32-year-old New York City resident, the allure of Disney World is a monthly pilgrimage. Unlike typical visitors who plan extended vacations, Stinner embarks on a whirlwind day trip, flying from Manhattan to Orlando in the morning, immersing herself in the theme park for several hours, and catching the last flight back home – all within a single day. Despite the demanding nature of these excursions, she maintains they are entirely worthwhile.
Stinner, who works in the technology sector, explained that multi-day trips to Disney are often unfeasible due to her demanding work schedule and limited paid time off. Her fascination with these solo day trips began in September 2025, after which she found herself completely captivated by the concept. “I simply wanted a few hours in my happy place,” she stated. “I figured out the logistics and realized how easy it actually was.” She firmly believes in the importance of prioritizing activities that bring genuine happiness, even if it’s for a brief period.
A Monthly Dose of Magic
Stinner has set a personal goal to undertake one solo Disney day trip every month this year. She describes Disney as the singular location where she can effectively disconnect from the stresses of daily life. “There is so much going on in the world and in life, and when I walk through those gates none of it follows me in,” she shared. “Disney has this magic where you cannot help but smile the entire time you’re there – and I think as an adult that is actually really rare and really valuable.”
She also highlighted the practical advantages, noting that single-day visits save both time and money, fitting seamlessly into her schedule without encroaching on her vacation days or budget. “There’s actually something really freeing about it. I’m in my own bed that night, recovered by the next morning, and I already have my next trip on the calendar,” she commented.
Logistics of a Disney Day Trip
Stinner typically begins her day around 4 a.m. to catch an early morning flight from New York, usually departing by 6 a.m. and arriving in Orlando before 9 a.m. By 9:30 a.m., she is usually through the park gates. Her aim is to stay until at least 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. to catch one of the final flights back, allowing for eight to nine hours within the parks. She anticipates being back in her New York apartment by 1 a.m. at the latest.
While acknowledging the significant exhaustion involved, Stinner often jokes about needing a recovery day afterward. However, she remains steadfast that the benefits far outweigh any temporary fatigue.
Cost and Travel Considerations
Regarding expenses, Stinner mentioned that prior to Spirit Airlines ceasing operations, round-trip flights were sometimes available for as little as $50. Currently, she relies more heavily on accumulating travel points to secure affordable airfare. Beyond flights, her typical spending for food, beverages, and transportation to and from airports averages around $200-$250. Her Disney annual pass covers park entry, eliminating the need for separate ticket purchases.
She has encountered a few travel disruptions, including a notable instance in January when a snowstorm in New York led to her return flight cancellation. This necessitated rebooking a later flight, significantly reducing her time in the parks. “I made the most of it, but it was a lesson to avoid traveling close to a snowstorm,” she reflected.
Finding Novelty in Each Visit
Stinner emphasizes that she never experiences boredom during her Disney visits, often devising a specific theme or focus for each trip to ensure a unique experience. For example, she dedicated her March visit to Women’s History Month, choosing attractions inspired by female characters or designed by female Imagineers.
She also shares her solo day trip adventures on TikTok, where she admits to facing some criticism. “I think there are a lot of people who don’t understand why I do this, or think I should be traveling to other places instead,” she said. “But I think everyone needs to find something that makes them as happy as Disney makes me.”
Stinner encourages others to find their sources of joy and to be supportive of those who pursue their passions. She also clarified that she does prioritize travel to other destinations, with plans for a ten-day trip to Italy this summer and an annual solo trip to Paris. “The day trips to Disney actually make that possible – they scratch the itch without eating into the vacation days and budget I need for everything else,” she concluded.
