A former youth pastor, David Vander Meer, accused of pushing his wife off a Utah cliff nearly two decades ago, died by suicide in a Las Vegas jail cell shortly after his arrest. Newly released police records indicate Vander Meer left behind a handwritten suicide note and a will before his death. He had been arrested last month on murder and insurance fraud charges related to the 2006 death of his first wife, Bernadette Vander Meer.
Pastor’s Arrest and Subsequent Death
David Vander Meer, who also worked as a school counselor and yoga instructor, was taken into custody in Las Vegas following a reinvestigation into his wife’s death. Bernadette Vander Meer, then 28, died after falling from Angels Landing, a challenging trail in Zion National Park, on August 22, 2006. At the time, her death was officially ruled an accident, though investigators noted suspicious circumstances.
The case remained dormant for almost 20 years until new information prompted investigators to reopen it. Charging documents filed this year revealed that a 2022 tip alleged Vander Meer had groomed children and engaged in a sexual relationship with one of them in his capacity as a youth pastor. Additionally, a former church supervisor reportedly told investigators that he did not believe Bernadette’s death was accidental. These developments led prosecutors to charge Vander Meer with murder and insurance fraud, alleging he collected approximately $567,000 in life insurance benefits after his wife’s death.
Vander Meer maintained his innocence after his arrest. However, before he could be extradited to Utah to face trial, he died in the Clark County Detention Center. Metropolitan Police Department records, released on Wednesday, state that Vander Meer was found unresponsive in his cell on the evening of June 24. An officer conducting routine checks had seen him awake and sitting upright about 30 minutes prior.
Discovery of Suicide Note and Will
The police report disclosed that Vander Meer had left a handwritten suicide letter and a handwritten will in his cell. These documents were photographed and impounded by investigators. The specific contents of the note and will have not been publicly disclosed. Details regarding the injuries sustained by Vander Meer also remain redacted in the publicly released report. Authorities have not yet officially announced the cause or manner of his death, though police stated he died from self-inflicted injuries.
Despite being booked into jail, Vander Meer reportedly denied having suicidal thoughts during health and mental health screenings. He was transported to University Medical Center, where he passed away the following day.
Revisiting the 2006 Incident
Bernadette Vander Meer’s death occurred during a hike with her husband. David Vander Meer told investigators at the time that he had been setting up a camera to photograph his wife with the sunrise when he heard her scream and saw her fall. The Angels Landing trail is known for its steepness and exposure, with at least 18 reported fatalities since 2000.
The reopening of the investigation was a significant development, welcomed by Bernadette’s family and friends who had long questioned the accidental nature of her fall. Friends recalled Bernadette confiding that her marriage was in trouble and that she was considering divorce. Her mother, Laura Gudenkauf, had previously shared that her daughter had expressed concerns about Vander Meer’s alleged infidelity shortly before their trip to Zion National Park.
Bernadette was an experienced hiker who had successfully navigated Angels Landing multiple times before her fatal fall, adding to the family’s and friends’ suspicions that the incident was not accidental.
Legal Ramifications of Vander Meer’s Death
With David Vander Meer’s death, prosecutors are expected to seek the dismissal of the criminal case against him. This outcome means the serious allegations of murder and insurance fraud will likely remain unresolved in a court of law. The case highlights the challenges in prosecuting crimes when a key suspect dies before trial, leaving unanswered questions for the victim’s loved ones.
The circumstances surrounding Bernadette Vander Meer’s death and the subsequent events have cast a long shadow, with her family and friends seeking closure that may now be unattainable through the legal system.
