Mauricio Pochettino is currently leading the United States national team in a World Cup on home soil, a significant achievement. However, attention is increasingly turning to his future beyond the tournament, as his contract is set to expire. The Argentine manager was brought in thanks to substantial private funding from wealthy benefactors and increased commercial revenue within the US soccer federation. Without such exceptional financial backing, it is unlikely a similar arrangement could be made for another coaching stint.

Limited Next Steps for Pochettino

Following the World Cup, Pochettino’s potential next managerial positions appear to be significantly fewer than previously anticipated. A return to Tottenham Hotspur was once a strong possibility, but the club has since secured Roberto De Zerbi, who has agreed to remain with the team after ensuring their Premier League status. Similarly, Manchester United was considered a potential destination, but their recent success under Michael Carrick, culminating in Champions League qualification, has led to him being appointed permanently.

AC Milan Considerations

Reports indicate that Pochettino held discussions with AC Milan in late May before fully committing to his World Cup responsibilities. However, the Italian club seems to be leaning towards appointing Ralf Rangnick as technical director and Oliver Glasner, recently departed from Crystal Palace, as their new manager. While Milan has engaged with multiple candidates, the initial interest in Pochettino for the managerial role appears to have diminished.

Premier League Aspirations

Pochettino has openly expressed his desire to return to English football, citing his affection for the country, its culture, and its competitive footballing environment. He stated, “I miss the world of football in England. I love the country, its culture, the football culture. For anyone with a competitive spirit who wants to measure themselves against others and test their abilities, it’s the ideal place. You have to constantly give your best.”

While several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Fulham, and Liverpool, are currently without permanent managers, it is widely expected that Enzo Maresca, Alvaro Arbeloa, and Andoni Iraola will be appointed to those roles respectively. Crystal Palace emerges as another potential opening, alongside Ipswich Town, though the latter appears to be considering Liam Rosenior and Gary O’Neill. Given Crystal Palace’s recent European trophy win, it could present an attractive proposition.

Argentina’s Managerial Position

Lionel Scaloni has achieved considerable success leading Argentina, including winning the World Cup and two Copa America titles. His contract, however, also concludes after the current World Cup. Should Argentina underperform or Scaloni opt for a change, Pochettino would be a strong contender for the national team’s top job. Nevertheless, most indications suggest Pochettino’s preference is to return to day-to-day club management.
