Fans of the Pussycat Dolls expressed confusion and disappointment on Wednesday when a reported technical issue prevented lead singer Nicole Scherzinger from performing her vocals on the group’s hit song “Buttons” during a concert in Warsaw, Poland. The incident left bandmates Ashley Roberts and Kimberley Wyatt performing the choreography without lead vocals, while a backing track played.

Technical Glitch Disrupts “Buttons” Performance

The Pussycat Dolls, comprising Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, and Kimberley Wyatt, recently embarked on their comeback tour. However, their show at COS Torwar in Warsaw was marred by an unexpected technical problem. As the concert transitioned to their globally recognized hit “Buttons,” Scherzinger was notably absent from the first half of the performance. Reports suggest a technical malfunction or a wardrobe issue was the cause of her delay in appearing on stage.

During the song’s most anticipated moments, Roberts and Wyatt were seen executing the elaborate choreography. However, with Scherzinger’s powerful vocals missing, the performance relied solely on the backing track, creating an awkward void where the lead singer’s part should have been. A fan-recorded video shared on social media captured the unusual scene, highlighting the absence of Scherzinger’s vocals and the other members’ limited contributions to the song’s main melody.

Fan Reactions and Comparisons to Melody Thornton

The incident quickly drew a significant reaction from fans online. Many viewers questioned why Roberts or Wyatt did not step in to cover Scherzinger’s vocal parts, especially given the song’s structure and the opportunity to showcase their own singing abilities. The sentiment was frequently echoed that former Pussycat Dolls member Melody Thornton likely would have seized such a moment.

Online comments reflected this sentiment, with many users recalling Thornton’s vocal prowess and her tendency to improvise and add ad-libs during live performances. Fans specifically referenced her memorable performance of “Buttons” at the 2006 American Music Awards, where she notably took on unassigned harmonies and impressed audiences. Typical remarks included:

  • “Where’s Melody when you need her?”
  • “THIS WAS YOUR CHANCE LADIES.”
  • “Melody would’ve said watch this.”
  • “No one wanted to take this moment to shine?”
  • “If @melodythornton or @therealcarmit were there, they would’ve stepped right on it.”

The reactions suggested a perception among some fans that Roberts and Wyatt missed a prime opportunity to demonstrate their vocal capabilities, with comparisons drawn to the perceived assertiveness and vocal talent of past members like Thornton and Carmit Bachar.

Tour Challenges and Ticket Sales

This onstage mishap occurs amidst a backdrop of challenges for the Pussycat Dolls’ reunion tour. The group had previously expressed a lighthearted wish for a flawless tour, posting a video of themselves in mock prayer for “flawless vocals, iconic dance breaks, no tech issues and zero n*p slips.” This sentiment now appears particularly poignant following the Warsaw incident.

Furthermore, the tour has faced difficulties related to ticket sales. The group was forced to cancel a significant portion of their planned US and Canadian dates earlier in the year due to poor sales, with many venues reportedly being largely empty. In response to lower-than-expected demand for their upcoming UK shows, ticket prices have been substantially reduced. For instance, a special offer on Ticketmaster allows groups to purchase four tickets for £150, bringing the individual cost down to approximately £37.50 per person.

The UK leg of the “PCD Forever Tour” is scheduled to commence on September 29th at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena, followed by dates in Nottingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Manchester, concluding in London at the O2 arena on October 13th.

Looking Ahead

Despite the recent technical difficulties and past sales challenges, the Pussycat Dolls continue their tour. The incident in Warsaw serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of live performances and the high expectations fans hold for iconic groups. The band’s ability to overcome such technical setbacks and maintain audience engagement will be crucial as they continue their European and UK engagements.
