Tragic Discovery in Brossard Home
A 56-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife were found deceased in their Bienvenue Avenue residence early Monday morning following reports of an armed assault. Authorities responded to a 911 call at approximately 12:45 a.m. and discovered Marcos Amilcar Diaz Lopez and Sonia Maricela Gonzalez Vasquez with apparent stab wounds.
History of Violence and Dropped Charges
Court records reveal Diaz Lopez faced assault charges against his wife in December 2024, including an incident involving a 30-centimeter kitchen knife described in police reports as attempted murder. Despite initially being ordered to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and maintain distance from Gonzalez Vasquez, all charges were unexpectedly dropped in December 2025.
Failed Protective Measures
After December 2024 arrests, Diaz Lopez was released under strict conditions including mandatory anger management therapy and electronic monitoring. Probation documents indicated successful compliance for two months before violations occurred. However, all supervision requirements were terminated in May 2025 without public explanation.
Systemic Failures Under Scrutiny
Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenièvre characterized Gonzalez Vasquez’s death as femicide during a National Assembly address. “Despite extensive protective measures being implemented initially, this tragic outcome demonstrates the complexities of preventing intimate partner violence,” Lafrenièvre stated.
Growing Calls for Reform
With this marking Quebec’s sixth potential femicide this year, over 50 domestic violence support organizations plan protests at the National Assembly next week. Advocates demand increased funding for victim protection programs in the upcoming provincial budget, citing tripled reports of intimate partner violence over the past decade.
Longueuil police continue investigating multiple scenarios including double homicide or murder-suicide. Officials confirm prior interventions at the residence but haven’t officially classified the deaths as domestic violence-related.
