Robert Thompson, now 43, has maintained a stable life without further offenses since his 2001 release, in stark contrast to his accomplice Jon Venables, who faced additional prison terms in 2010 and 2017 for possessing child sexual abuse images.

The 1993 Murder and Subsequent Release

In February 1993, 10-year-old Robert Thompson and Jon Venables abducted two-year-old James Bulger from a shopping center in Bootle, Merseyside, leading to his tragic murder. After serving eight years in a young offenders institution, both received new identities upon release in June 2001 to ensure their safety and support rehabilitation. Authorities determined neither posed a continued threat to the public following intensive therapy and evaluation.

Restrictions include a ban on entering Liverpool, with protection costs estimated at £1.5 million to prevent revenge attacks.

Thompson’s Background and Trial

Born on August 23, 1982, as the youngest of seven siblings, Thompson grew up amid family turmoil after his father left when he was five. His mother struggled with depression and alcohol issues. Post-conviction, she lived in seclusion, frequently changing identities and residences near her son’s detention facility.

During the 1993 trial, prosecutors portrayed Thompson as the leader who influenced Venables. Detective Phil Roberts, who questioned the boys, stated: “As far as I’m concerned that day – 20 years ago – I stared evil in the face. I think Thompson was in charge, but they both attacked James. They were a match made in hell. A freak of nature. They went out that day to kill – I truly believe that. And if they hadn’t been caught I fear they would have struck again.”

Post-Release Achievements and Stability

Thompson earned five GCSEs, completed A-Levels, and pursued interests in art. Reports indicate he formed a long-term relationship with a male partner in 2006, who knows his true identity.

Expressions of Remorse in Parole Records

Thompson’s 2001 parole board statement, released publicly in 2018, detailed his remorse. He said: “At that time of my life, I was completely out of control and spending time with a group of friends whose main occupation was committing crime and causing trouble. I was out of control because my life on the streets was better for me than my life at home – there was nothing for me at home.”

He added: “I do feel aware that I am now a better person and have had a better life and a better education than if I had not committed the murder. There is obviously an irony to this, but it is part of my remorseful feelings as well. I, personally, wish Mr and Mrs Bulger and their families to know that I am desperately sorry for what I did, and aware of the enormity of what I did.”

Thompson expressed: “I am deeply ashamed of what I did, and of having played a part in this horrible murder.” He regretted not intervening when Venables led James away, as seen on CCTV, and denied sexual assault claims, noting they did not speak during or after the attack.

James Bulger’s father, Ralph, rejected the remorse as “false words,” stating: “I’ll never accept that either of these two is sorry for what they done.”

Recent developments with Venables’ parole hearing, where James’s mother Denise gains rare access to observe proceedings (excluding his face), renew focus on the case 33 years later.
