Trent Rockets secured a commanding victory over Manchester Super Giants at Old Trafford, propelling themselves to second place in the women’s Hundred standings. The triumph marked the Super Giants’ first loss of the season, ending their unbeaten streak.

Rockets’ Innings: Dunkley and Luff Shine

Despite the notable absence of England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, the Trent Rockets posted an impressive total of 153 for eight. The foundation of this strong score was laid by a remarkable partnership between Sophia Dunkley and Sophie Luff. Dunkley, batting at number three in Sciver-Brunt’s usual position, smashed a rapid 57 runs from just 33 deliveries. She was ably supported by Luff, who contributed a swift 51 from 26 balls. Together, they forged a crucial 91-run stand that anchored the Rockets’ innings.

While the Rockets experienced a slight wobble towards the end of their innings, losing wickets as Sophie Ecclestone claimed two dismissals for the Super Giants, the target of 154 proved to be well beyond their opponents.

Super Giants’ Chase Falters Under Pressure

The Manchester Super Giants struggled to build momentum in their pursuit of the target. Their batting lineup faltered, and they were ultimately bowled out for 122 runs within 93 balls. The Rockets’ bowling attack, led by captain Ash Gardner, proved too potent. Gardner delivered a stellar performance, taking four wickets for just 16 runs. Her disciplined bowling significantly stifled the Super Giants’ chase.

Adding to the Super Giants’ woes, Sophia Dunkley showcased her all-round capabilities by taking three crucial catches in the field. This defensive prowess, combined with Gardner’s bowling, ensured that the Super Giants could not find the necessary scoring rate to challenge the Rockets’ total. The 31-run defeat was a stark contrast to their previously unbeaten run in the competition.

Key Performances

  • Sophia Dunkley (Trent Rockets): 57 runs off 33 balls, 3 catches
  • Sophie Luff (Trent Rockets): 51 runs off 26 balls
  • Ash Gardner (Trent Rockets): 4 wickets for 16 runs
  • Sophie Ecclestone (Manchester Super Giants): 2 wickets
