UK Forces Intercept Russian ‘Shadow Fleet’ Tanker
In a significant maritime operation, Royal Marines have successfully boarded and secured a Russian oil tanker suspected of operating within the nation’s “shadow fleet.” The complex raid, spanning six hours, took place in the English Channel during the early morning hours.
‘Shadow Fleet’ Tactics Under Scrutiny
The vessel is believed to be part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” a collection of older, often poorly maintained ships and tankers utilized to transport oil globally, circumventing international sanctions. These vessels are known to employ tactics such as disabling tracking systems, falsifying location data, and conducting ship-to-ship transfers to obscure the origin of the oil.
Political Leader Condemns Evasion
Following the operation, a prominent political figure, Sir Keir Starmer, issued a statement via the social media platform X, emphasizing the government’s resolve. “In the early hours of this morning, I directed our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel,” he stated. “This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin’s war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide.”
Praise for Armed Forces and Law Enforcement
Sir Keir Starmer also extended his gratitude to those involved in the operation. “I want to thank those involved, including our Armed Forces and law enforcement officers who keep this country safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” he added.
Further details regarding the seized tanker and its cargo are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
