Rugby Union’s Gain: Tim Ryan’s Unwavering Commitment to the Code

Despite a childhood immersed in rugby league, Wallabies hopeful Tim Ryan has firmly stated that a career in the National Rugby League (NRL) was never a serious consideration, nor is a future switch of codes on his agenda. The rising star for the Queensland Reds has rapidly ascended into the spotlight following a stellar Super Rugby Pacific debut in 2024, marked by a hat-trick against the Blues and an impressive six tries in his subsequent four appearances. This remarkable form has captured the attention of Australia’s coach, Joe Schmidt.

Affectionately nicknamed ‘The Junkyard Dog’, Ryan’s path to rugby union was solidified when the Reds expressed early interest during his high school years. He followed in his father’s footsteps, playing club rugby at Brothers. While the crossover between rugby codes has become increasingly common, with notable names like Zac Lomax, Joseph Aukuso-Suaalii, Angus Crichton, and Mark Nawaqanitawase making high-profile moves, Ryan insists such thoughts have never crossed his mind.

“The Reds Academy had been in touch while I was at school, so I just thought it was a great opportunity for me, but I wanted to go through a club system at Brothers first following in my dad’s footsteps,” Ryan explained. “Rugby league was not serious at all, really. I just grew up playing junior rugby league and then once I got to about grade 10 union took over. I haven’t looked back. I love league and still watch it, but I love rugby union. I definitely haven’t even thought about crossing codes or anything like that.”

Schmidt’s Early Interest and Ryan’s Physical Development

Coach Joe Schmidt quickly engaged with Ryan in 2024 to discuss his Test future. At the time, the Wallabies’ head coach advised the then 22-year-old that he needed to develop physically before being considered for higher representative honours. Ryan confirmed that no further discussions have taken place since then. However, the young winger has since gained 10 kilograms and appears to have put a disappointing 2025 season, where he scored only twice, behind him.

The moniker ‘Junkyard Dog’ originated from Reds teammates Ryan Smith and Matt Faessler during a podcast appearance. Ryan, however, downplayed its influence on performance expectations. “When I first came into the squad, I was trying to earn my spot and just going pretty hard at training, and I’m obviously an under-sized guy playing a little bit above my weight,” he said. “I think Fez [Faessler] just said ‘he’s got a bit of junkyard dog about him’ and our media team just took it,” Ryan elaborated on the nickname’s origin. “Really, the only pressure I put on is not letting my family down because I know it’s such a big family base and I have a lot of support around there. I want to put on a show for them, but everyone else I don’t really think of.”

Finding Balance and Consistency in 2026

By 2026, Ryan believes he has achieved a greater equilibrium in his game. He has crossed the try line eight times this season, demonstrating increased clinical decision-making regarding when to engage in attack, while also establishing himself as a more formidable defender. An early learning experience came during the Reds’ first defeat of the year against the Waratahs, where Wallabies sensation Max Jorgensen delivered a two-try performance. The following week, Ryan responded with a masterclass of his own against the Highlanders, acknowledging Jorgensen’s heroics as a significant learning opportunity.

“Definitely, he’s such an exciting player Jorgo, so I watch as much as I can – he’s obviously one of the Wallabies top backs, so he’s the guy you’re going up against for that top spot,” Ryan commented. “I honestly think my defence has been pretty solid for my whole career because I’ve come from a rugby league background where there’s a lot of defence, but it’s just that positioning and that difference with the wider channels and the reads. I feel like I’ve been a lot more consistent this year, whereas I probably lacked that last year when there were a few of those scenarios where the consistency dropped off. I’m still only young, and just being under a professional program for extra years has really helped me.”

Defiance Ahead of Crucial Clash

Queensland faces a historical challenge on Saturday as they aim to keep their Super Rugby season alive and become the first Australian side to defeat a New Zealand opponent in a final held in New Zealand. Ahead of the critical match against the Chiefs, Ryan expressed unwavering confidence. “It’s not really something we’ve talked about at all. All we’ve talked about is getting the job done and getting the win because we know we can with the playing group we’ve got.”
