A significant operation in the English Channel has resulted in the arrest of a 38-year-old man and the seizure of a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker. The vessel, identified as SMYRTOS, was intercepted on Sunday morning, June 14, in what is being described as a groundbreaking enforcement action.
Sanctions Offence Leads to Arrest
The arrested individual is an Indian national who has been taken into custody on suspicion of sanctions offences related to Russia Regulations. Officials confirmed that he will be interviewed by investigators. The National Crime Agency (NCA) stated via its official channels, “This morning, NCA officers worked alongside partners such as the British Armed Forces to board and seize the SMYRTOS — a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker intercepted in the English Channel.” The agency further added, “Our investigation continues.”
Military Support for Interception
The complex, six-hour military operation saw substantial support from various branches of the armed forces. Assets deployed included aircraft from the Maritime Air Group, comprising Chinooks, Merlin Mk4, and Wildcat helicopters, alongside an RAF P-8 aircraft. Naval support was provided by HMS Sutherland and HMS Ledbury.
Official Statements Highlight Impact
Prime Minister Keir Starmer lauded the success of the operation, stating, “This operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin’s war in Ukraine that they cannot hide.” He also extended his gratitude, “I want to pay tribute to all those involved, including our Armed Forces and law enforcement officers who keep this country safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the skill and bravery involved. “Operations like this require skill, professionalism and courage. I pay tribute to our Armed Forces personnel and all those involved,” Jarvis commented. He added, “Russia relies on its shadow fleet to fund their conflict in Ukraine and our interdiction delivers a blow to Putin’s illegal war.”
Vessel to be Monitored
The SMYRTOS is set to be moved to a provisional anchorage off the South Coast of England. Government sources indicate that the vessel will be closely monitored for any environmental or safety concerns. This action follows a March agreement allowing British Armed Forces and law enforcement to board shadow fleet vessels in accordance with international law.
