Countryfile presenter and Paralympian Sammi Kinghorn has announced the arrival of her first child, a baby girl named Delilah. The athlete and her husband, Callum Aitken, welcomed their daughter on July 7.

Kinghorn shared the joyful news on Instagram, posting a tender photo of herself cradling newborn Delilah in a hospital bed. Another image captured Aitken pushing their daughter in a car seat, ready to head home. “Hey there Delilah… Callum and I welcomed our gorgeous little girl into the world on the 7th July,” Kinghorn captioned the post. “We’re both absolutely besotted with her and can’t imagine a time when she wasn’t here!”

The couple’s announcement was met with a wave of congratulatory messages from fans and followers. Comments included “Congratulations Sammi! Welcome to the world Delilah!” and “Congratulations to you both.”

Pregnancy Announcement and Journey

Sammi Kinghorn and Callum Aitken first revealed they were expecting a child in March. The announcement was made through a heartwarming video shared on social media. The clip featured the couple embracing, with Kinghorn draping knitted baby socks and a sonogram over Aitken’s shoulders. Aitken then donned a ‘Dad’ cap, prompting Kinghorn to reveal her own ‘Mum’ hat, before he swept her up in a celebratory kiss.

Kinghorn captioned the pregnancy reveal video: “Half of me and half of you! We can’t wait to meet you in July.” Shortly after, she shared a mirror selfie showcasing her baby bump for the first time, humorously captioning it: “Rocking the Winnie the Pooh look in my training kit.”

During her pregnancy, Kinghorn reflected on the experience, noting its significance given her past. “When you have a spinal injury, your body stops doing many ‘normal’ things, but being pregnant has allowed me to watch my body change and do something it’s supposed to do,” she shared. She also posted a series of photos documenting her growing bump over the preceding months.

Overcoming Adversity: Sammi Kinghorn’s Inspiring Story

Sammi Kinghorn’s journey to motherhood is underscored by her remarkable resilience and determination. At 14 years old, she sustained a life-altering injury on her family’s farm in the Scottish Borders. While helping to clear snow in 2010, she was accidentally crushed by a forklift. Her father, unaware she was on the lower part of the machinery, lowered the bucket onto her.

Kinghorn has recounted the harrowing experience, describing the intense pressure and the initial disbelief. “I remember feeling this pressure on my neck,” she told a publication in 2023. “I started to laugh; I thought Dad was joking, that he’d gone a bit too far. Then I started screaming. I felt my back popping and before I knew it my head was in my crotch. I was crushed right down into a tiny ball.” She recalled the terrifying moments, thinking she might die and that her father would bear the guilt.

Upon regaining consciousness, she attempted to move but found she could no longer feel her legs. “I remember feeling all the muscles in my legs pulsing. They were twitching and then all of a sudden they stopped. That was the last time I ever felt my legs,” she explained.

Initially, Kinghorn concealed the true nature of the accident from her parents, telling them she had tripped. However, the severity of her injuries, diagnosed as vertebral fractures, necessitated telling the truth. Her parents were devastated, and Kinghorn spent six months in hospital. Her family, including her brother Christopher, provided unwavering support during her recovery.

A Triumphant Sporting and Broadcasting Career

Kinghorn transformed her challenging circumstances into a platform for extraordinary achievement. She became a world champion wheelchair racer and a double Paralympic medallist. Her accolades include setting a 100m record at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris.

Her contributions to disability sport were recognized with an MBE. Furthermore, she secured a presenting role on BBC’s Countryfile, a position that allowed her to reconnect with her rural upbringing.

The path to her athletic success began in 2011 when a physiotherapist introduced her to the Inter Spinal Unit Games. This experience ignited a new ambition. By 2012, she achieved second place in the London Mini Marathon, marking the start of a decorated career. Intensive training led to her qualification for the Rio Paralympics in 2016, where she secured fifth place in the T53 100m race.

The birth of her daughter, Delilah, marks a new and cherished chapter for Sammi Kinghorn and Callum Aitken, celebrated by their wide circle of admirers.
