A man has been sentenced to nearly three decades in prison for the brutal killing of his love rival with a samurai sword. Michael Bretton, 41, received a 30-year sentence for the murder of Craig Hurcombe, 39, at Bristol Crown Court. The fatal incident occurred on January 1 at Mr. Hurcombe’s workplace in Somerset.

Obsession and Escalation

The court heard that Bretton had become fixated on Kate Saunders, who had previously dated Bretton but was in a relationship with Mr. Hurcombe at the time of the murder. Ms. Saunders and Bretton had met online, but she ended contact, stating she was not seeking a serious commitment. She subsequently rekindled her relationship with Mr. Hurcombe, a development that reportedly left Bretton exhibiting significant jealousy.

Following the end of his relationship with Ms. Saunders, Bretton engaged in stalking behavior directed at both her and Mr. Hurcombe. This included placing GPS tracking devices on their vehicles and loitering near Mr. Hurcombe’s place of employment. An altercation at a pub involving Bretton and Mr. Hurcombe, which required police intervention, further highlighted the escalating tensions.

The situation intensified on New Year’s Eve when Mr. Hurcombe discovered that Bretton had vandalized his car by slashing its tires at the business premises. Bretton returned to the location the following day, intending to confront Mr. Hurcombe, and proceeded to inflict the fatal wound.

A Premeditated Attack

A post-mortem examination revealed that Mr. Hurcombe died from a single stab wound. Prosecutors characterized the act as a “premeditated and cold-blooded execution.” Following the murder, Bretton removed the SIM card from Mr. Hurcombe’s phone and placed it in his own device. He then sent text messages from Mr. Hurcombe’s phone to Ms. Saunders, attempting to manipulate the situation by urging her to be lenient with Bretton and to reconcile with him.

Concerns about Mr. Hurcombe’s welfare arose when his mother contacted Ms. Saunders inquiring about his whereabouts, after his employer reported him missing. The court was informed that over 210 people attended Mr. Hurcombe’s funeral, a testament to his popularity and the significant impact he had on his community.

Judge’s Sentencing Remarks

His Honour Judge Hart, delivering the sentence, described Bretton as a “cowardly and secret assassin.” He noted the case’s resemblance to fictional crime narratives and stated that Bretton’s actions were driven by jealousy and an inability to accept the end of his relationship with Ms. Saunders. The judge emphasized that Bretton’s actions were not motivated by love but by a possessive refusal to accept rejection. He further highlighted that Mr. Hurcombe was taken by surprise and had no opportunity to defend himself.

Mr. Hurcombe’s mother, Nicola Hurcombe, shared her profound grief, stating that her son’s loss is immeasurable. She expressed deep distress over the brutal nature of the murder and the subsequent pain caused by the manipulative text messages sent from her son’s phone. She conveyed that the large attendance at his funeral underscored the positive impact Craig had on numerous lives.

Defense and Investigation

During the trial, Bretton claimed that Mr. Hurcombe’s death was a “tragic accident,” asserting that he had fallen onto a sharp metal object. He stated that he panicked upon discovering Mr. Hurcombe’s condition, describing his eyes as “glazed over” and his body as cold. He acknowledged that the circumstances, as they unfolded, did not appear favorable to his account.

In addition to the murder charge, Bretton was also convicted of stalking Ms. Saunders. Detective Inspector Neil Meade of the Avon and Somerset Police’s Major Crime Investigations team described the attack as “horrendous.” He commented on the unimaginable fear Mr. Hurcombe must have experienced, facing a threat with a samurai sword and meeting his end in such terrifying circumstances. DI Meade suggested that even if Mr. Hurcombe did not recognize his attacker, he would have undoubtedly seen the sword, emphasizing the horrific and lonely nature of his final moments.
