A seagull has made a remarkable recovery after being struck at high speed and becoming lodged in the grille of a car for several miles on a motorway. The driver was unaware of the bird’s predicament until after he had parked his vehicle. A friend alerted him to the situation, prompting the driver to return to his car, where he discovered the seagull wedged beneath the front number plate.

Unforeseen Passenger Discovered

The incident occurred on the A1(M) as the driver was traveling towards Darlington, County Durham. Upon realizing what had happened, the driver contacted Darlington Bird Rescue for assistance. Despite the considerable distance the bird traveled trapped in the car’s front end, rescue professionals reported that its injuries were surprisingly minor.

In a statement shared on social media, Darlington Bird Rescue detailed the unusual rescue. “Well, this was an unexpected call, especially on a day when we are closed, but we couldn’t not help,” the organization stated. They explained that the gull had been hit at high speed on the motorway by a driver en route to the train station in Darlington from Aycliffe.

Seagull’s Condition and Prognosis

The rescue team noted the bird’s precarious situation: “He didn’t realize that this fella was in his grill until he got a message reporting it. The gull had himself wedged pretty darn good.” Fortunately, a thorough examination revealed no broken bones. The seagull’s wings and legs were intact, though its back was sore. Importantly, there were no discernible abnormalities in its tissues or bones.

“He has no big scrapes, no big wounds, just a few leg scrapes and a lot of damaged feathers,” the rescue center reported. They attributed a small spot of blood to a broken feather quill that had bled, suggesting it could even occur from vigorous preening. The bird’s immediate care plan includes close monitoring, pain medication, and ample food to aid its recovery and compensate for the traumatic experience.

Similar Incidents of Avian Road Encounters

This remarkable survival story echoes a similar incident from the previous year, where a pheasant also had a fortunate escape after colliding with a car. In that case, the bird remained trapped inside the vehicle’s radiator grille for approximately 24 hours before being rescued. The pheasant was eventually freed after a mechanic dismantled the car’s undercarriage.

The pheasant had been spotted on the road by the car’s owner, who braked sharply. Fearing the worst, the driver initially checked for the bird but, seeing no sign of it, assumed it had flown away and continued her journey. Hours later, a colleague noticed the feathered stowaway lodged in the front grille of the silver car.

Pheasant Rescue Operation

Unable to free the bird herself, the driver took her vehicle to a local garage in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire. Mechanics were reportedly astonished by the unusual passenger. Lucy McDonagh, 44, documented the rescue, which involved her husband and the garage owner, James Collett, 59, carefully extricating the pheasant.

Ms. McDonagh, from Northleach, Gloucestershire, recounted the event: “She (the customer) couldn’t get it out herself and it was hissing at her.” The garage staff placed the car on an MOT ramp and meticulously dismantled the engine’s undertray to access the trapped bird. The process took about 15 minutes. Astonishingly, the pheasant emerged unharmed, with Ms. McDonagh remarking, “Somehow, it was absolutely fine – not a feather out of place!”

Road Safety for Wildlife

These incidents highlight the vulnerability of wildlife to road traffic and the unexpected resilience some animals can display. While drivers are urged to be vigilant, especially on motorways and rural roads, these stories also underscore the importance of wildlife rescue organizations and the dedication of individuals who go the extra mile to help animals in distress.

The seagull’s survival, despite being hit at high speed and enduring a lengthy journey trapped in a car’s grille, serves as a testament to its fortitude. The swift action of the driver in seeking professional help and the compassionate response of Darlington Bird Rescue were crucial in ensuring a positive outcome for the bird. Similarly, the pheasant’s rescue demonstrated the crucial role mechanics and bystanders can play in saving animals from perilous situations.

As wildlife continues to share its habitat with expanding road networks, awareness and preparedness remain key. These narratives, while extraordinary, serve as reminders of the delicate balance between human activity and the natural world, and the potential for both danger and remarkable survival.
