In October 2022, a fishing trip for three friends off the coast of Louisiana turned into a desperate fight for survival when their boat capsized. Sonny Nguyen, Lu Nguyen, and Paul Le found themselves stranded 12 miles offshore, facing the unforgiving elements and, eventually, a terrifying encounter with sharks. The ordeal, which lasted 28 hours, tested their limits of endurance, courage, and resilience.

A Fishing Trip Gone Wrong

The day began with clear skies and the promise of a good catch. The trio had set out from their Louisiana homes with the intention of catching red snapper to enjoy with their families. However, the weather took a sudden, dramatic turn, leading to their 24-foot boat capsizing within minutes. In the ensuing chaos, they managed to grab life jackets, two coolers, and their cell phones, though the latter proved useless due to the lack of signal so far from land. Lu Nguyen faced an immediate challenge, unable to find an adult-sized life jacket and forced to wear one designed for a child. To keep it from floating away, he had to wear it backward, with the headrest positioned uncomfortably at the front of his neck.

For 24 hours, Sonny, Lu, and Paul treaded water in the Gulf of Mexico, using the coolers as flotation devices. The relentless sun, multiple jellyfish stings, and severe dehydration began to take their toll. Sonny Nguyen, no relation to Lu, suffered a heart attack during this harrowing period. Despite a pact to stay together, Paul Le made the difficult decision to swim towards a shrimp boat visible about a mile away, hoping to secure help. Tragically, after two hours, he had not returned, and the shrimp boat had vanished, leading his friends to believe he had drowned.

Facing the Elements and Despair

Growing increasingly exhausted and demoralized by the presumed loss of Paul, Sonny and Lu attempted to swim towards an oil rig over three miles away. However, the persistent ocean current thwarted their efforts, pushing them far from their target and any hope of immediate safety. It seemed their situation could not worsen.

Amidst their despair, Sonny and Lu shared a moment of profound vulnerability. Sonny stopped kicking, and Lu, his energy depleted, looked his friend in the eye. “I don’t know how much longer I can go on,” Lu confessed. “If you can, bring my body home. If I die, just tie my body to the coolers.” Sonny, refusing to give in to despair, shook his head and responded with deliberate words: “You will not die.” Lu, struggling to keep his head above water, replied, “I’m doing my best, but it’s only a matter of time until I can’t keep my head out of the water.” Sonny, determined to keep Lu’s will to live alive, retorted, “Listen to me! If you die, I’m going to stuff you in the ice chest and deliver you to your parents.” He recognized the crippling fatigue sapping Lu’s strength and reiterated, “If you die, I’m not going to leave you.” Lu continued to kick feebly, clinging to the hope that their families knew they were missing and that a search was underway. Yet, the absence of any aircraft or Coast Guard vessels since spotting a plane during the night offered little comfort.

The Shark Attack

Suddenly, Lu’s eyes widened in terror as a gray dorsal fin and an enormous head surged towards him from just five feet away. Adrenaline and primal fear coursed through him as the shark, a 10-foot tiger shark, lunged, its jaws agape, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth. The shark aimed for Lu’s neck and head, but its powerful jaws clamped down on the child-sized life jacket Lu was wearing, narrowly missing his neck by less than an inch. “Shark!” Lu cried out.

The shark began to thrash its head violently from side to side, yanking Lu’s body and shaking him like a rag doll. It seemed intent on finishing its prey. In a surge of desperate strength, Lu managed to raise his right arm and punch the shark’s snout with all his might. The blow had no discernible effect on the predator, which continued its assault, attempting to drag Lu away from the safety of the coolers and his fellow survivor. The water churned and boiled around them.

The shark’s broad head, over a foot wide, was mere inches from Lu’s face, its black eyes fixed on him. Lu struck again with his left hand, feeling a surge of power, but this too only seemed to agitate the shark, causing it to snap its head more viciously and use its tail for added force. He tried pushing the shark’s head away, the rough, sandpaper-like skin scraping his hand. What felt like an eternity had passed in mere seconds.

Fighting Back and Rescue

Facing the terrifying prospect of being dragged under, towed away, or having his face bitten, Lu resorted to a final, desperate maneuver. He slapped his right hand onto the shark’s face, then used his thumb to locate and push against the shark’s eye. He repeated the action with his left hand. Pain shot through his hands as he made contact.

Sonny, witnessing the chaos from behind the coolers, was stunned. He saw the enormous shark, estimated to be nine to ten feet long with faint stripes, and initially thought it had bitten Lu’s neck. Then he saw the shredded life jacket protruding from the shark’s mouth. Lu’s hands appeared to be on top of the shark’s head, giving the impression of a wrestling match.

Sonny moved to intervene, intending to strike the shark’s nose. However, at that precise moment, the shark released the life jacket. With a powerful sweep of its tail, it turned and disappeared beneath the waves. Sonny’s mind raced with fear, scanning the water for any sign of the shark’s return, perhaps preparing for a submerged attack. He plunged his head underwater and saw no sign of the immediate threat, but observed three or four other large sharks circling about six or seven feet below, moving with increased speed, possibly agitated by the commotion or the scent of blood.

Emerging from the water, Sonny rushed to Lu. “Are you all right? Are you OK?” Lu, gasping for breath, could not respond verbally. He held up his right hand, which was bleeding from two lacerations. The most serious wound was a deep slice through the top of his index finger, where flesh had been removed. Sonny, acutely aware that blood in the water could attract more sharks, instructed Lu to return to his position between the coolers and place his injured hand inside one of them. Blood dripped into the cooler as the two survivors rested, Lu’s hand throbbing and his mouth dry from severe dehydration.

The U.S. Coast Guard was aware of the missing men and initiated a search covering an area the size of Rhode Island, estimating only a one percent chance of finding them alive. However, through a combination of sheer determination and a series of fortunate events, all three men were located after 28 hours adrift. The rescue swimmer who descended from the helicopter noted the presence of several sharks circling just below the surface as they pulled the survivors to safety.

The harrowing experience, detailed in the book In Deep Water: A True Story of Sharks, Survival, and Courage by Michael J. Tougias, highlights the extraordinary will to survive against overwhelming odds.
