Sheffield United is reportedly facing a significant threat of a 12-point deduction, a penalty that could severely impact their aspirations for promotion back to the Premier League. The club, which recently began its 2026/27 Championship campaign with a goalless draw against Birmingham City, is embroiled in a legal dispute stemming from its ownership change.

Ownership Dispute and Legal Proceedings

The current predicament for Sheffield United traces back to December 2024, when COH Sports, an American consortium led by businessmen Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, acquired the club from its previous owner, Prince Abdullah. However, a dispute has emerged over the terms of this sale, with Prince Abdullah asserting that he is still owed £35 million as part of the transaction.

In response to this alleged outstanding debt, Prince Abdullah has initiated a winding-up petition against the current ownership consortium. A crucial hearing for this petition is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19. According to reports, if the court declares the current owners insolvent, the club could face a substantial 12-point deduction. This penalty is a standard measure within football regulations for clubs found to be in financial distress or failing to meet financial obligations.

Furthermore, the situation could have further repercussions for the current leadership. Co-owner Steven Rosen is reportedly at risk of being banned from his role, particularly if the hearing does not conclude favorably for the consortium. This potential ban is linked to allegations of his prior involvement in an insolvency event.

Perspectives from Involved Parties

A source close to Sheffield United’s current ownership expressed disappointment with Prince Abdullah’s actions, characterizing them as an attempt to harm the club and its supporters through public relations tactics. This source emphasized that the 2024 deal was structured with the advice of Prince Abdullah’s own financial advisors and that the current owners are committed to the club’s financial health.

The statement from the source highlighted a contrast with the previous ownership period, suggesting that the club incurred a points deduction under Prince Abdullah for missed payments to football creditors. The current owners, Eltoukhy and Rosen, reportedly extended an invitation to Prince Abdullah to reinvest in the club and contribute to their promotion efforts. Their stated focus remains on ensuring the club’s long-term sustainability and achieving success in the upcoming season.

Conversely, United World, representing the former ownership, issued its own statement. They conveyed that while they do not wish to see Sheffield United endure prolonged uncertainty, they feel compelled to take legal action to protect their interests due to the alleged non-payment by Eltoukhy and Rosen. United World indicated that both the English Football League (EFL) and the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) are aware of the situation, but they have not yet observed any intervention from these bodies.

United World’s statement aimed to preempt the potential consequences for the club if the matter is not resolved before the August 19 hearing. They expressed hope for an amicable resolution but indicated that they would have no control over the outcomes thereafter.

Club’s Immediate Future and Performance

Despite the looming financial and administrative challenges, Sheffield United is preparing for its next fixture. The team is scheduled to play away against Swansea City on Saturday, August 22. The club’s performance on the pitch will be crucial as they navigate this period of uncertainty. The ultimate outcome of the legal proceedings could significantly alter the club’s trajectory for the current season and beyond, potentially impacting their ability to compete for promotion.

The situation underscores the complex interplay between club ownership, financial regulations, and on-field performance in professional football. The decisions made in the coming days regarding the winding-up petition will be closely watched by fans, stakeholders, and governing bodies alike, as they will determine the immediate future of Sheffield United’s season.
