Diego Simeone declared Arsenal the strongest opponent Atletico Madrid encountered this season following their Champions League semi-final exit at the Emirates Stadium.
Atletico traveled to north London aiming for their first Champions League final since 2016. The tie, level at 1-1 after the first leg, concluded with a 1-0 second-leg defeat thanks to Bukayo Saka’s first-half strike, securing a 2-1 aggregate victory for Arsenal.
Arsenal now advance to their first Champions League final in 20 years, set for May 30 in Budapest, while also holding a five-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
Simeone Praises Arsenal’s Dominance
Simeone acknowledged Arsenal’s superiority across the two legs, despite Atletico’s clashes with La Liga powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid multiple times this season.
“If we got knocked out, it’s because our opponents deserved to get through,” Simeone stated. “They took their big chance in the first half and deserved to advance. I feel calm and peaceful.”
He added that Atletico lacked clinical finishing in key moments but improved after halftime. “We gave it our all and now must accept our position. I’m proud of our supporters and players. We competed hard and reached difficult stages, even without trophies.”
Simeone emphasized Arsenal’s quality: “They were the better team over these two legs and the best we’ve faced this season. They play with rhythm and conviction that’s hard to contain.”
Compliments for Mikel Arteta
In his post-match press conference, Simeone lauded Gunners manager Mikel Arteta: “Mikel has done an incredible job at Arsenal. He’s worked long to reach the Champions League final and challenge for the league.”
“They possess incredible financial power, linked to their success. I’m pleased for them—they deserve it after years of hard work.”
Oblak Echoes Team Sentiment
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak concurred, admitting Arsenal merited progression to face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the final. PSG hold a 5-4 lead after the first leg of their semi-final.
“Whoever wins is the best team,” Oblak said. “They won, so congratulations. We’re sad and angry, but that’s football.”
He noted Atletico showed excessive respect early on but rallied in the second half, though not enough. “Arsenal were better and earned their spot in the final.”
